what are you DOING ABOARD MY SHIP She stated that her father was Jefferson. Now why did that name sound so familiar. It helped that she elaborated on him, for it answered Hook's unspoken question. Jefferson, the portal hopper. Ah yes. Throughout Hook's travels he had heard of the man. So it seemed that her father was not just a simple peasant after all. Less so knowing that he had worked with The Dark One. Hook tried to think of whether he could use this information to his advantage . . . but decided that he would have time to figure that out. Right now, he needed to deal with the fact that he had a child on his ship.
And he of course didn't want to let her in on the fact that he was planning on destroying Rumple. "What sort of assurance did the Dark One give you in exchange for your possessions?" He had apparently confirmed that her father was in Wonderland . . . how exactly did he confirm this so that she believed him? "Believe me love, The Dark One constantly has his own agenda. Being kind is not in his capability unless it benefits him in some way." Rumple cared only about his power . . . placing all else second, including his own son. She thanked him for the welcoming message and Hook gave a bit of a nod.

When she gave Papa’s name, Hook wore this expression as though the name was familiar but he couldn’t quite place it. But at her explanation of portal jumper, his eyes brightened in recognition. So he had heard of Papa?! Well apparently he’d had quite the reputation when Grace was a baby so much so that some circles still spoke of his work!
It still struck Grace as strange that Hook was so interested in the sorcerer she’d come to as well as Papa. What exactly did he want? There was no doubt he’d grown more curious the moment she’d mentioned Rumplestiltskin. Now why would that be? Had he worked with him before? Or was he someone Hook wished to make a deal with and so learn more about?
Yes, it was best to be cautious when it came to deals with the Dark One. Grace had heard awful stories of agreements not ending nearly as well as her own. Apparently Rumplestiltskin could be...quite cruel and vindictive if someone didn’t hold up their end. Fortunately, as difficult as it had been to part with her treasures, she had paid up. No, Grace liked to consider herself a girl of her word! Promises were important! And once made she had every intention of delivering!
Papa...Papa had always kept his promises to her up until that very last time! But it wasn’t his fault! It was an accident! He’d tried his best to fulfill it! And Grace was sure Papa would still want her to keep her word no matter what else happened!
Oh great...Now he was asking for details about her deal! She didn’t want to lie but was still wary of telling him about the mirror in her possession. “I was worried he might be lying to spare my feelings. I thought Papa might be dead.” It really wasn’t like him to break his promise and be late for tea! And he’d been gone for weeks by that point! She was scared witless!
“He showed me where Papa was with a magic mirror.” That was true. And there was no need to tell him she still had it. Hopefully..He had no intention of checking her bag. If he did he’d find the mirror ordinary looking as it was and might very well put two and two together and seize it!
“So if he wasn’t being kind, why do you think he wanted them?” she asked curiously. She still couldn’t make sense of it and would really like to know!
When they were on deck, Hook nodded at her thanks which made her feel more welcomed still. She was being treated much better than she ever would have dreamed for being a caught stowaway.
“So how did you get the Jolly Roger?!” she asked eagerly. “It’s a wonderful ship!” she breathed. Grace was going to be here for a while so she might as well learn what she could! Yes, she’d heard rumors about how the captain had acquired his vessels; but, it was one thing to listen to stories and another thing to hear a first hand account from the captain himself even as she expected he’d embellish the tale at least slightly to bolster his reputation!

what are you DOING ABOARD MY SHIP She told him that she feared the Dark One would have been lying to spare her feelings and Hook had to suppress a chuckle at the mere thought that the Dark One would do something to spare her, or anyone's feelings. He didn't even care about the feelings of his own son. Why care about another man's child?
"Then Dark One wouldn't do anything to spare yours, or anyone else's feelings. You need not worry about that." Blunt honesty, or manipulative lies. Rumpelstiltskin did whatever best suited him. She then revealed that she was show her father through a magic mirror. Interesting thought. He supposed that was what motivated her to get to him, being certain that he was alive . . . and hopefully remained so.
"Who knows," Hook stated in response to her question. "The Dark One doesn't do anything without purpose. I am sure he had his reasons for he does nothing out of the kindness of his . . . well, whatever is in him." He doubted the demon had a heart. If he did, it was as black as soot. She then asked him how he got the Jolly Roger. Now that was a story to explain and not one he often engaged in. He concealed all of the emotions that he felt inside as it brought his mind to his brother and his tragic passing.
"Aye, that she is," Hook agreed proudly when Grace spoke of how the ship was wonderful. Hook had no issue boasting about it for a ship was a Captain's pride and joy. "She had I have been through a lot together; weathered many a storm and embarked on many an adventure." He couldn't imagine a life without her. "You'll soon see that she is no ordinary ship," he told her. Made with enchanted wood certainly made her more durable than any normal ship. It was why she was coveted, and why Hook would never give her up without a fight . . . and that fight would have to be to the death.

“Do you think that’s really true?” she asked softly when Hook said the Dark One would never do anything to spare anyone’s feelings. To her...Rumplestiltskin had seemed...sad maybe even a little lonely. “Everyone cares about someone,” she asserted. The Dark One had no reason to care about her it was true. But even if he didn’t care about her at all, she was sure there was someone he loved and worried about! That’s how people worked! You couldn’t live without attachments, connections. Grace’s heart was aching because Papa was gone. She didn’t have that special person with her anymore. But she still loved him and still cared! Surely everyone had someone like that!
So Hook had no idea of why the Dark One would want a stuffed rabbit and cloak either. Hardly surprising. Hook had quite the reputation. But he wasn’t known for being magical. The way she heard it, none of his crew possessed one ounce of magic. It made what they did all the more impressive. But that being the case, he probably wouldn’t understand why Rumplestiltskin would need anything. The Dark One relied on magic.
Hook’s disdain for the Dark One was becoming more and more clear by the minute. He didn’t think he cared about anyone’s feelings. And now he wasn’t even willing to admit he had a heart?! That was ridiculous! Unless someone’s heart had been magically ripped out of their chest, everyone had one! Surely the Dark One was no exception.
“Why do you hate him so much?” she asked bluntly. She supposed it was none of her business. But it bothered her. Even if he had his own reasons, Rumplestiltskin had helped her. He showed her the truth when no one else would. And he gave her a way to check on her papa whenever she wanted! Well..It wasn’t exactly a matter of wanting...seeing him like that...It was...It was a compulsion, an obsession. She couldn’t not look.
Grace smiled at Hook’s proud tone. She thought a captain should appreciate and love his ship. And the Jolly Roger certainly looked splendid to her! She was excited to ride the vessel! And she definitely had a much nicer view up on deck!
“Can you tell me about one of your adventures?!” she asked eagerly. She really would love to hear a tale from the famous Captain Hook!
“Oh she doesn’t look ordinary at all! She’s gorgeous! Where did the name come from?!” she piped up.

what are you DOING ABOARD MY SHIP Grace asked him if he believed that to be true, and Hook was certain of it. He knew the Dark One extremely well; he had spent centuries studying him, finding out all he could about him . . . and he knew the man even before he'd become the demon he was now. So yes. Hook truly believed that the worst about the Crocodile. She spoke of how everyone cares about someone.
"Well anyone he's ever cared about he has either killed, or abandoned." Milah and Bae foremost in his mind. The irony. The Crocodile killing Milah, the motive supposedly being for abandoning Bae, when Rumple had done the exact same thing. No. It was jealousy that drove the demon. The refusal to see that his wife was happily in love with another. He was a bitter, cruel creature of darkness and Hook grew more eager to rid the world of him with each passing day.
Her question went along with his thoughts but he fell silent. "That may be a story best saved for another day." He often offered the information of losing a loved one, but she was a child. She had dealings with the Dark One. Saying anything now would be helpful and . . . it was a grim tale to tell. The loss of a loved one was never easy to endure, nor an easy truth to hear. Grace asked him to tell her about one of his adventures and then praised the ship, inquiring as to where the name came from.
"My, you're quite the curious little lass, aren't you?" He said teasingly. "Once you get settled, we'll dine together. I imagine you're hungry. That will allow the opportunity to ask of any adventure tale you would like to hear. Because believe me love, I have enough to fill each and every day you are aboard my ship." Which was for however long it took to get them to land. He then began to lead her down stairs, going down the stairs first, heading toward the quarters she would be remaining in for the duration of her stay.

What made the captain speak so confidently about the Dark One? Clearly they shared a history and not a pleasant one. Hook was loathe to say one good thing about him. Grace knew bias when she saw it. So she wasn’t content to take Hook’s word not for this. But she knew better than to call him out on it as well. If he was that determined to see the Dark One as a monster, nothing she could say would change his mind. And someone like her knew so little about him to begin with. But Rumplestiltskin had seemed lonely in her eyes. And for whatever reason, he had helped her. So she was grateful to him as saddened as she’d been by the news. Well, at least she knew Papa wasn’t dead. And she would fight her hardest to get back to him always! She wasn’t giving up! One day, the two of them would be reunited! She’d do whatever was necessary to see that day come.
“Who did he kill? Who did he abandon?” There was nothing wrong with asking questions. She was curious and hopefully he’d answer. Then she could hazard a guess as to why there seemed to be such tension between him and the Dark One.
He fell silent at her question but then she hadn’t really expected an answer. She imagined such a thing would be a touchy subject. You couldn’t hate someone that much without a painful story. She hoped she’d never grow to loathe someone that much. She didn’t want to hate anyone! Grace was forever that person trying to see the best in everyone no matter how much she suffered as a result. She understood now that she’d been naive and that the world was not as kind a place as she believed. She’d had to adapt and grow more wary, suspicious of others. But still..She wanted to believe in people’s kind hearts. Surely deep down everyone was good just unfortunate circumstances twisted people’s pure intentions, making monsters out of men. As people grew depressed and dejected faced with the world’s many hardships, they’d steel their hearts and take rather than be taken from, lashing out preemptively to protect themselves.
“Will you tell me one day then?!” she asked hopefully. Grace wanted to understand him. She was sure there was a reason for his fierce hatred.
She beamed when Hook teased her for being curious. She was quite proud of that characteristic. Without a thirst for knowledge, well you wouldn’t learn nearly as much!
“You’re going to let me eat with you?! Really?!” she exclaimed. She hadn’t had a proper meal in days. It was all she could do to keep her mouth from salivating at the thought of a decent supper. She had no idea what sort of food that captain ate but surely it was better than stale bread!
“Any story I want?! Everyday?!” she breathed, eyes widening in pure delight and wonder. There were few things in this world she enjoyed more than a good story.
She eagerly followed Hook down below. “Where are we going?”

what are you DOING ABOARD MY SHIP She asked two very loaded questions: who did Rumple kill, and who did he abandon. The two answers were tied together. For he killed his wife, and abandoned his son. The irony, was that he killed Milah for abandoning their son and yet, he was quite quick to do the same. It only fueled Hook's hatred for the man even more. "The details need not be given. I say this to you as a warning. Do not be fooled by any kindness he displays." For he cared for nothing or no one, but himself. All for his power and sustaining it as well as strengthening it. She then asked if he would one day tell her and Hook knew the easy answer to that. "Perhaps," he stated noncommittally. Though, he most likely wouldn't. She was young. Far too young to understand the complexities of being in love. Just as Bae had been too young and clouded with anger to understand the truth and the reasons for what happened.
He gave a smile when she expressed excitement over eating with him. "Aye. We shall dine with the crew tonight," he told her. Hook didn't always eat with them, but they were of course good company. And it was probably best she get used to meals on the ship, for she would be here for the next few days at least. His smiled turned into one of amusement as she asked if he would tell her any story she wished. "Within reason of course, young lass. But aye. I have many adventures tales to share and will offer them to you when time and convenience permits." So long as it didn't get in the way of his own objectives.
Though her eagerness to hear them was what motivated him to want to tell them. He did feel some sympathy for her, being without her parents. He knew how much of a toll that could take on a person. He had been surrounded by such unloved boys in Neverland. Pan had preyed on them, corrupted them, and it was a damn shame. He remained silent upon her last question, leading her toward one of the guest chambers. He proceeded to unlock the door and pushed it open. "Your quarters for the duration of your stay aboard the Jolly Roger," he explained, allowing her to step inside and take her own tour of the chamber.
