“Don’t look at me like that, you know what you did was wrong,” she said testily, shaking her head as she walked down the empty hallway. ” I thought I could trust you,” she said with slight frustration before the dog came bounding down the hallway to meet up with her. Rose couldn’t help but smile, “Oh, alright.” she said, kneeling down so that she was on the floor and able to play with the rascal of a dog. Some animals weren’t meant to be caged. It wasn’t in her to put the ones in cages who looked like their life was leaving their eyes as soon as she shut the door.
Rose scratched the back of the dogs ears, laughing quietly to herself as a look of nirvana came across its’ features. But just as quickly as he had slipped into a place of peace, his ears perked. He instantly started running toward the door. “Max,” she called after the dog, putting her hands on her knees before she stood up and followed the barking dog down the hallway. At the continued barking she heard footsteps. Rose narrowed her eyebrows together, “We’re closed,” she said, pushing her hair out of her face as she came to a standstill. The man standing in the entryway was none other than the sheriff. A jolt of electricity went through her as she looked down immediately to mask the blush that flooded her cheeks. “ Sheriff,” she said quietly, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know it was you,”. Rose parted her lips, awaiting to say something else before instead smiling politely. He was smitten with the town mayor, every one knew that. Besides, it wasn’t as if he had ever paid her any attention.
Instead of saying anything else, she held the back of her arm tightly, turning on her heel to go get food that she could leave out for Max over night. She could hear the sheriff rustling around. The blush in her cheeks was starting to finally fade away. Though her heart felt like it was about to leap out of her chest. Feelings had a way of being so incredibly inconvenient. Rose slipped her gold colored jacket on, fastening the buttons as she watched his silhouette working with the animals. Taking in a deep breath, Rose turned away from him and made her way out of the animal shelter.
