I tried THE HERO THING ... DIDN'T TAKE So this is what it had all come down to. They were back in the Enchanted Forest, full memories in tact which . . . was more painful than the alternative. Part of Killian wished his memories could have been erased just as Emma's were. And then on the other hand, how could he want to rid himself of memories about the woman he loved? It was a difficult dilemma, but it also was a useless one to consider. For nothing could be done. Emma and Henry had left Storybrooke and were on their way to a city to make lives for themselves. Ones that did not involve any of them. He was uncaring if was selfish of him to be bitter and frustrated by this.
He also was not planning on staying with any of them. He didn't belong in this life with castles, kings and queens. He belonged aboard his ship. On the open sea. He was a pirate after all and no matter how much he tried to be a better man, it was pointless. He was and always would be, Captain Hook, a villainous pirate that sailed the open seas and took what he pleased. He had made his way from the crowd who had set up camp for the night, as it was late and they were in the middle of the forest. But sleep evaded him in all his bitter loneliness. Instead, he sat against a tree, his back against the trunk and he reached into his pocket for his best friend. "Cheers," he said in a low voice to no one in particular as he opened the cover to his flask. Rum. The one thing that would never let him down. And with that thought in mind, he took a particularly large swig of the beverage that he hoped would start to ease away his sorrows and with any luck, assist him in passing out for being awake was far too painful right now.

It was a sacrifice that she had to make, and maybe he was better off with Emma anyways. She'd made too many mistakes; she had failed being a better person. She dropped her hand into her lap, the tears threatening to fall. She couldn't lose herself now, she was still Queen of this place.
Maybe at least in Henry's honor, she'd be a better queen. Regina wanted to try, but she was afraid of failing at that too. Not that she would ever show that fear, no, she was much too proud to do that. Shaking out of her thoughts, she pushed herself up on her feet quietly and brushed herself off. She needed to try to get some sleep for the day ahead when they would all travel back to their homes. Snow had Charming, Belle had Rumple, and Hook...he had no one, just like her. Her eyes searched for him in the crowd, and at first she didn't see any sign of him.
Then, she picked up a small sound. It was faint, but Regina followed the sound anyway and soon found herself standing over Hook. "Why are you all the way over here? It's a bit chilly." She made her voice no louder than a whisper, and she, herself, was trying to act tough. "What are you drinking?"

I tried THE HERO THING ... DIDN'T TAKE Hook heard someone coming, but he didn't bother to raise his gaze to discover who it was. He did not care enough. It was not until he saw shoes and a pair of legs at his eye level, as well as heard a questioning voice, that he was able to quickly determine who had joined his miserable company. Even still, he did not raise his head. Instead, he just took another gulp of his drink, slightly clenching his jaw. "Your majesty," he greeted in a low, hardly enthusiastic tone of voice. The title came from habit more than anything else. A reminder. That these were the lives they seemed to be meant to lead. She had said something to him once . . . something that always stuck with him. That villains don't get happy endings. It appeared she was right. For she no longer had her son, and he no longer had the woman he loved.
"I could ask you the same thing," he said as he finally slightly tilted his head upward to look at her. Why had she come all the way over here? Perhaps she was feeling just as heartbroken as he was. "Well, lucky for me my drink helps keep me warm," he said with a slight smile though it lacked any joviality. It was more of a cheeky comment followed by a matching expression . . . though without the same zeal that Hook often spoke in.
She then questioned what it was he was drinking. Had it been anyone else, he would have asked them to leave him in his misery. But something told him that he and the Queen had far more in common than most of the others. They all had what the two of them spent so long searching for: companionship. Of course the nature in which they found this was severely different, but in loving someone, they both suffered the loss of them . . . and here, they had no one left to love. "Rum," he answered simply. He then extended the flask toward her. "Would you care to join me?" He asked, genuine in his offer, though his words continued to lack any excitement. Misery loves company, isn't that what they often say?

All the happy pe ople. Well, they weren't all happy, but they weren't all sad either. They at least had someone. She sighed, shaking her head. "They're not completely happy, but they at least have someone."
When Hook mentioned the drink keeping him warm, Regina forced a chuckle. Yes that would be true, she supposed. They had something in common, she realized. They both were alone in this world. There was no one that they could lean on for support. She wasn't sure what to do about that, since as a pirate, Hook would be heading out to seas. She was pretty sure of it; pirates often did that whether they were happy or in anguish. She also wasn't surprised to hear he was drinking rum. He offered it to her, and she took it, taking a big swig of it herself, though she flinched at the taste. She handed it back and then sat next to him. "That was the first time I ever had rum. It wasn't bad. Thank you."

I tried THE HERO THING ... DIDN'T TAKE She told him that he didn't have to call her Majesty for she didn't feel like one. He gave a slight smile at that, though it still lacked any semblance of happiness. "That is what you are, is it not?" He questioned. "Just as I am still a pirate." He had tried so hard to be different, but it was futile. "We can't escape who we really are. Being here, in this state, proves that." That they could try to be with the ones they loved in a life that they wanted . . . but they were not fated for such. It could not be, no longer how hard they fought for it.
She went on to say that she couldn't sleep, nor could she be around the others . . . and he knew full well what she meant. For she listed off the couples who were happily in love. Snow and Charming still had each other. Rumple and Belle had one another -- a relationship that Killian would never bloody understand. And then there was the two of them. "We make quite the pair don't we," he said sarcastically, smirking at how miserable the two of them were. "Both returned to this land, with nothing." For all that they loved were in a land without magic, and what was worse . . . they held no memory of them. He watched her take a large swig of the beverage before revealing that it was the first time she had tried rum, and thanked him for it. She handled it rather well, considering it's strong taste. He imagined she was accustomed to finer drink, but alas, this was all they had.
"Well don't let it be the last, lass," he told her, not taking it back but rather, allowing her to take another sip. "You can have a seat, you know," he told her, patting the area next to him. He wasn't sure how much he had to drink, and whether it was affecting his senses yet. He was too numb to feel anything right now. Though he had to admit, he never saw this one coming: sharing a drink with the Regina, the former Evil Queen herself. It was just as unforeseen as sailing to Neverland with Rumplestiltskin. What a bizarre turn of events everything had taken.

She could only hope his life would be good from here on out.
Hook mentioned being quite the pair and Regina could only nod for a moment. "Well, villains don't get happy endings. This seems to be proving that statement rather well, don't you think?" She wished that the stupid book that Henry had would give her a happy ending; she'd changed...she was now good. Shouldn't that count for something? Apparently not...
Regina had never expected to have a full conversation with Killian, but it wasn't bad that they were. When he let her have another sip,she almost hesitated. She wasn't sure what to think of rum, but with a small shrug of her shoulders, she took another large gulp. Then he told her that she could have a seat, and patted the area next to him, and she complied, crossing her legs underneath her. "Thank you."

I tried THE HERO THING ... DIDN'T TAKE She vocalized the very thought that had been in his mind, recalling the words she had spoken to him aboard the Jolly Roger on their way to Neverland. His ship. How he missed it so. It was the only thing that he had to look forward to now; finding his ship, and being the man that he seemed destined to forever remain: a pirate. "Aye," he agreed. "But I was foolish enough to hope." And hope, was such a dangerous thing to possess for the disappointment was rather unbearable.
"What can I say, I was trying to be an optimist I suppose," he said, only partially sarcastic, but he knew himself that there was truth to his words. He had fallen in love when he hadn't thought that to be possible or in his future, and so he had hoped; hoped that something would become of it. Yet that was not the case. And he doubted it could ever change. She then accepted both his offers: one of rum and one of having a seat next to him. When she had a sip, he took another, before offering it back to her. "A hell of a lot of good that did me," he added in a low voice, thinking aloud.

I tried THE HERO THING ... DIDN'T TAKE Regina apologized, stating that she wished there was another way. Hook's immediate response was silence. With all these damn curses and sacrifices that everyone constantly had to make . . . he wondered if there really was any hope for them to be happy. Or if there would always be what felt like a hole in his heart. "There never is," he said in a low voice, speaking aloud his thoughts as he took another long gulp before handing her the bottle. There was never another way. There was always the way that hurt the most . . . especially for them. For 'villains'. No matter how hard they tried to reform themselves, it seemed they were often the ones left with nothing.
Deciding to change the subject a little, Hook turned to look at Regina. "Are you really going to return to the castle with them and just, coexist with the happy couple?" The happy couple of course being Snow and Charming. Somehow, Killian couldn't picture it; picture Regina ruling at their side, content with life and embracing what awaited them here in this world. He didn't think she would revert to her evil ways either. Hence the reason he questioned what she planned to do. For he knew what he intended to do and it sure as hell wasn't going to involve staying here with the lot of them. He didn't belong here with them. This wasn't his life. And if he couldn't be with Emma, then he was going to be the man that he seemed destined to be: Pirate Captain Killian Hook Jones.

I tried THE HERO THING ... DIDN'T TAKE When she handed him the rum, he didn't fail to notice that it held more content of the drink than when he had initially passed it to her. Which, meant only one thing. "Finally. A bloody good use for magic," he stated, taking a rather large swig as Regina answered his question.
She spoke of having no other choice . . . of how everything was the same as before the curse. Everything was he same . . . but so different. They were all different. How could they not be? They'd spent such a significant amount of time in the other world, that it felt nearly impossible for everything to go exactly back to the way it once was.
"The library?" He questioned with a raise eyebrow and slightly teasing smile, as he handed her back the drink. "Now that's certainly quite the demotion," he added jokingly. She then seemed to know of his own intentions, inquiring -- or assuming rather -- that he was going back to see. "Aye," he stated, having no hesitations about it. "Soon as I find my ship." Someone had it now, and he just needed to find out who that someone was. Looking at the ground, he spoke aloud his thoughts.
"I don't belong here, with them." It wasn't a statement that sought sympathy or someone to assure him that he did belong. He knew he did not. The main reason he had stayed . . . was for Emma. That was all he missed from the other world, but it was enough to make his entire heart and being hurt from the loss of her. He then turned his head to look at her. "You're welcome to join me," he said with a slight smirk, somewhat jokingly, assuming that sea life would not appeal to her. He merely guessed that she -- like him -- felt a bit of a sense of not belonging.

Memories of Henry danced through her mind and she put her focus on the ground ahead of her. "Magic does have its uses."
Regina leaned her back against the tree, her eyes going up toward the sky. She took the flask back from him, taking a large swig of it, and she felt some of the effects sinking in. She shook her head slightly as the liquid slid down her throat. Then he questioned about the library, and the fact it seemed to be the demotion. "It seems to be the one place that I won't see Charming and Snow together."
Their conversation changed to Killian's ship. He did plan on going out to sea...as soon as he found his ship. Regina nodded, understanding the reasoning behind it; he was with his crew there, but at least he wasn't with the happy couples...it was all hard to believe that Rumpelstiltskin was happy before either of them. They both knew just how evil the man was, and Regina was evil, too....but she had changed. Whether the Dark One had or not, was still up in the air.
Killian mentioned not belonging and Regina felt the same way. Then the pirate offered to let her travel with him on his ship, and she felt touched at the invitation, but she shook her head. "I feel the same way, that I don't belong here. And as much as I think it would be fun to travel on your ship with you, I have responsibilities here. But let me know if you want me to use magic to help find your ship. I'm sure I could find the Jolly Roger. Then again, if you want the distraction of chasing it down yourself, then by all means, don't take me up on my offer. "

I tried THE HERO THING ... DIDN'T TAKE The queen spoke of how magic had its uses and benefits, and Hook supposed that was true. With all these curses that seemed to constantly befall them, well . . . it made magic a bloody nuisance more than anything else. Wasn't it supposed to give them their happy endings, not destroy them? Seemed to deprive both him and Regina of it . . . though he supposed it went back to her initial words of villains not getting happy endings. The thought only made him take a larger swallow of the drink when the flask was passed back to him. She told him that the library was the only place she wouldn't see Snow and Charming.
"Understandable," he told her. "But considering their nature, best brace yourself for many attempts of heart to hearts from their part." At least Snow, he imagined. She had that whole caring and nurturing personality. And they would most certainly sympathize with Regina as she proved to be reformed from the evil queen she once was. She then politely declined his offer, stating that she had responsibilities here and even offered to assist him in finding his ship. Yet at the same time, she knew that tracking it would serve as a distraction, which was why Killian would also have to politely decline her own offer. "Hunting it down is indeed part of the fun. Makes for another adventure," he told her. Really, it was a way to pass the time; something that he felt would stand still in the absence of the woman he loved.
"Much gratitude for the offer though," he told her. "I think I'll stick to the old fashioned way." Looking; without the aid of magic or anything that would speed the process. Once he had his ship returned to him, things could go back to normal he supposed. He could return to the pirate he had lived as for centuries. Revert to his former self. At least, that was what he had set in his mind . . . but his heart, seemed to be pulling him in another direction. Emma may not be here, but she had still changed him for the better, and that change was not something that he could so easily dismiss or stray away from.

I tried THE HERO THING ... DIDN'T TAKE Hook gave a slight smirk of amusement at her words, speaking of having to grin and bare it . . . minus the grinning part. "Grimace and bare it sounds more like it," he said in his own attempt to joke and provide some humor in these rather grim circumstances. She then kept her offer in place, telling him that if he changed his mind, he knew the way to her castle.
"Aye," he responded with. He was grateful that she was willing to provide her help, for who knew how desperate he may grow. He was indeed a determined man but he was also depending on regaining his ship . . . to return some meaning into his life, for it all felt lost now with the loss of Emma Swan. "And if you change your mind," he began to say, pausing in between his sentence as he looked at her, his small smirk still in place. "Well, I'm sure you can use your magic to find out where I am," he finished, only half kidding. She did indeed have powerful magic, so he knew better than to underestimate it's potential and what she was capable of. At least they were on good terms.
