Liam sat on the small desk in their small house, going over charts. It was a warm day and in the privacy of his and his brothers house Liam had chosen short pants and only his loose shirt, for once. He could barely concentrate anyway, despite the soft cool breeze coming through the window. For once it had absolutely nothing to do with the weather at all. His lack of concentration came from one certain acquaintance, namely Lady Elizabeth. Mentally he was already counting down the moments to see her again, yet knowing he could not see her the way he could potentially wish for. Well, this was life. He could long for something all he wanted, there were no guarantees for anything.
Liam barely heard his brother move behind him, nor did he pay much attention to it, so he completely forgot to greet him as he usually did, instead twisting the pen in his finger, while staring longingly outside at the sea, while not seeing the sea at all. His mind was still fixed at Elizabeth and impossible scenarios he should not even be thinking about. When had he so completely lost his head and apparently heart to her? When did he turn into this love sick fool, that could not bring himself to work on what he usually loved doing? Apparently he did recently. Another sigh escaped him.

a hero's journey
THAT IS INDEED GOOD FORM Killian had just made his way back to his and his brother's shared house. There was a smile on his lips which only transformed into a smirk when he saw his brother sitting at his desk, deep in thought, sighing as he stared out into the distance. It seemed his distracted brother did not notice Killian's presence which the younger of the Jones member took full advantage of. He casually made his way over to Liam, approaching him from behind as he suddenly put his hands on his shoulder and gave him a playful push.
"Day dreaming again, brother?" He asked with clear teasing in his voice. He moved his position so that he was leaned against his desk, purposely moving in front of his brother to pull him from his thoughts. "Dare I ask about what?" Though Killian knew. Of course he did! He was well aware of his brother's feelings for Elizabeth, just as aware as he was of Elizabeth's feelings for Liam. It was what had prompted him to find out rumors he heard, and then approach Elizabeth's parents with a proposal.
It had taken a bit of convincing, but Killian had presented it in a way that they could not refuse. And they hadn't. He only asked them not to mention anything to Liam or Elizabeth, for the pressure would cause his master plan to backfire. "Or perhaps first I should inform you of a rather interesting rumor I heard, concerning our dear friend, the Lady Elizabeth." Killian's tone was purposely nonchalant, teasing, overly casual . . . and all the while he was smiling teasingly as he looked for his brother's reaction.

Liam jumped! He actually physically jumped a little in his seat, so surprised was he by his brother pushing him a little. He did not expect it, never even really noticed the younger one was in the house to begin with. Damn it. And of course he had to tease him about it. What was he meant to say? He couldn’t admit to daydreaming. That was just not him. He was meant to be his brothers role model. What crappy role model would he be? But damn, he was just day dreaming.
“Not daydreaming. Thinking.” He lied. Killian probably saw straight through it. “And in any case, brother, where have you been?” Docks, probably, knowing him. Helping with one of the ships, like he usually did. He was a good kid, intending to fulfill his duty. But of course his brother could not keep his mouth shut. Liam felt his stomach drop at the mention of Elizabeth and rumors. She was victim to rumors? And since when did they listen to it?
“What rumors, brother? Is she alright?” Liam got up, nervous and furious at the same time. They better not dare talk bad about this precious woman. She had been the perfect daughter, the perfect friend and all that. Why would anyone spread a rumor about her?

a hero's journey
THAT IS INDEED GOOD FORM Thinking; not daydreaming. Killian suppressed a scoff at the term. He knew his brother better than that. The man was sighing! He questioned where Killian had been and then further question what rumors, asking if she was alright. He supposed he could answer both questions with one explanation. Liam's reaction however only continued to make Killian smile. "She's alright. Better than alright in fact," he said, purposely dragging it out a little bit. "I was just speaking to one of her friends. She informed me that a suitor has come for Elizabeth." It was what had prompted Killian to immediately go to her parents.
"According to the others, he's quite handsome . . . not that I would notice such a thing, but it is good news for our Elizabeth, is it not?" Oh he was having too much fun with this. While a suitor had indeed come, nothing had been formalized. It had only been a proposal sent to the family but . . . Elizabeth was a young, exceptionally beautiful woman. This proposal was hardly the first one that would have been brought to the family.
But little did both Liam and Elizabeth know that Killian had offered a proposal of his own, on his brother's behalf. And fortunately, that was the one that her parents were seriously considering . . . should all go well. "I was thinking we should go to offer our congratulations," he added on, continuing to smile. "This could very well be the one for her." He was pushing it and he knew it . . . but he would not have done so if he didn't feel s confident in his entire plan to have them admit their feelings for one another.

Those should be good news to Liam. Elizabeth had a suitor. She could find a man to marry her, a suitable match. She could get it all, a wedding, children, a secure place in life, a future. If the man was good, he’d leave her her freedom, let her go to the sea to watch the sunset as she so loved. He hoped he’d allow her to spend moments there, to just relaxed, as Liam knew this was one of the few placed all three of them could relax. Still Liam struggled to breathe. Secretly maybe, despite realistically knowing he’d be no match for her, he had hoped, he had dreamed and wished to be such a man for her. He just wasn’t. And it did make him struggle to even keep the façade up. Killian would probably see right through him.
“Of… of course. Brilliant… brilliant news for her.” And not good at all to him. It even got worse. From what it sounded like her parents did consider this to be the match for her. She’d… get married. But to him it felt like he could no longer breathe. He even felt physically dizzy. How was this even possible? And why did this happen? Right. Right now he curse being born a commoner.
“We… we should… in whatever way.” She deserved their support. It should make no difference, but there was no way Liam could do it right now. Later, maybe. He turned to look back outside, trying to calm his nerves and body.

a hero's journey
THAT IS INDEED GOOD FORM Killian knew his brother better than that, and we was fully aware that Liam was attempting to hide his true reaction to his brother's news. Killian raised an eyebrow as he watched his older brother attempt to express his happiness over Elizabeth having found a suitor. Here was a perfect opportunity for the man to admit his true feelings, but it would seem that Killian would have to further prompt him to do so. This exaggerated rumor would not be enough. "Damn it man, is it really so difficult for you to admit your true feelings for her?" Killian blurted out. The two of them were just . . . well, they were the same to be quite honest.
Elizabeth had feelings for Liam but would not say anything; Liam had feelings for Elizabeth yet will not admit them. Killian had made it his personal mission to have the two confess their true feelings for one another so that they could be happily married. Both of them deserved that. "You still have a chance, but only if you cease denying how you feel about her." He had already spoke to her parents . . . but it appeared that wuold be the easy part compared to trying to get Liam and Elizabeh to actually confess how they feel. "Tell me plainly, do you have feelings for her?" He asked directly, not expecting his brother to lie about it. Besides, he knew he would be able to tell and it might just give grounds for Killian to curse again. So of course Killian knew the answer, but now it was time to put it out there . . . it was time for his brother to admit it.

He knew his brother was direct, but never this direct. He asked him about his feelings for Elizabeth as if they were the most obvious thing in the world. Liam almost choked on his own saliva then and there. Well he should have guessed, his brother knew him from the moment he was born, they had hardly ever been really separated, not even the Navy managing to keep the Jones brothers away from each other for too long as they both cared for each other and felt responsible for the others well being. And now apparently his brother cared for Liam and Elizabeth getting together against a suitor. He wasn’t mad. If her parents had decided upon an eligible match, they wouldn’t steer away from it for a lowly captain of the navy, despite knowing him and Killian for years and sharing affection. This was about her future, not just a laughing matter. What did they have to offer? A modest household, with a modest income, that might support a small family for both brothers and their wives, but that was it.
“Why answer when you appear to know it already. YES! Yes, I have feelings for Elizabeth brother and I feel like I can’t breathe just thinking about it. But I have no chance, don’t you see?” He sighed. Her parents cared for her, more than their father ever cared for even just their mother. “We are commoners, Killian. Commoners who climbed the ranks in the navy, yes, but still commoners, mere soldiers. What do we have to offer to our wives? Our estate, our income. Is that enough for an heiress like her? For her parents? I doubt it. It would be a modest life full of hard work. They would not want me for her. Feelings don’t matter. They want Elizabeth to be taken care of and while I could do it emotionally and want to do it, financially and in terms of status: We remain commoners, not worthy of her. She’d sink in status if she were to accept me. I have nothing to offer her, no comfort, nothing.” He was standing now, shaking with emotion, with withheld anger at knowing he stood no chance, but still losing the hope he had, it made him slightly mad. He fell in love, but it stood no chance.

a hero's journey
THAT IS INDEED GOOD FORM It caused Killian's heart to ache to hear his brother speak so low of himself. He thought that he was just a mere commoner, that he had nothing to offer Elizabeth. Killian knew that he could easily tell him the truth in that her parents were accepting of this match . . . but he first needed Liam to believe in himself. He needed his brother to realize his worth and to believe that he was good enough for her. Otherwise, this would never work. The younger of the Jones brothers stood quietly as he listened to him get it all out. Express his feelings for their dear friend, as well as his apparent certainty that he had nothing to offer that. That he believed he had no chance.
And why? Because he was not a man of status? Because they were not born nobles? He remained silent for several moments after his brother finished, taking in his words as he composed his own and organized his thoughts. "You say that you have nothing to offer her, and yet, love is everything and all a person could possibly want." And he knew Elizabeth was such a person. "It is worth more than the highest status or all the riches in the world." Killian firmly believed that. Status was not everything. Gold was not everything. "To be loved by someone, truly loved, makes a person feel as if they are richer than the greatest king in all the realms." He took a step closer to his brother, wanting him to truly hear what he was trying to tell him. "Nobility is defined by what you do, not by who are or were born as. You have proved to be far more honorable and loyal than any other man. Why shouldn't her family accept this? What makes a man's title stronger than his heart?"
A rhetorical question that he was going to answer himself. "Nothing, brother. Absolutely nothing." And Liam had the greatest heart of any person he knew. Which was why he and Elizabeth were perfect for one another. "Tell me something, if I was in love with a noblewoman, would you tell me that I was not worthy of her? Would you truly believe that as a commoner, I would be a poor match for her? That she would be better off without me?" He was attempting to give his brother some perspective; to make him see it from his own eyes because just as he wanted to see his brother happy, he knew Liam felt the same way about him. He gently put his hand on his brother's shoulder. "You know that you can love her far more than anyone else and can truly make her happy. It is this that makes you the perfect match for her." Not because of titles or status or wealth. But because of the strength of his heart and Liam, had the strongest compared to any other man.

Of course Love was all that matter, even to him, but love could no feed them. If it could, he could have provided for Killian so easily when he was younger, yet he couldn’t. He had to give himself to the navy and work hard in order to feed himself and his young brother with Killian joining later one as well. Of course Killian was right when he held his little speech about how important love was, it was, just as important as the boy said, but at the same time the problem remained: He could not give Elizabeth the standard she was used to. He would be lucky to feed her and any child and she would have to work hard as the Lady of the household and Lady of the estate, given that he knew that they’d be given one by the king upon marriage.
“Brother, you sing a praise to me, yet you should sing it to yourself as well. All I did was do what I had to do, for us. That we happen to be good at what we do is a plus.” He could not say a lot, but the reality of the fact that for Elizabeth it would be a decline in comfort would not change. However his brother got him. The moment he turned it all around he got him.
“No. You’re right. Any woman to have you would be lucky. You are hard working and would worship the ground she’s walking on. And that’s the problem here: This is Elizabeth, Killian. This is a free spirit. I have to be away from her so long, how would our love last? And she’d live different than what she’s used to. I love her, but… does she love me? Could it be enough for her? I don’t want to get my hopes up just to have them crashed.”

a hero's journey
THAT IS INDEED GOOD FORM Liam spoke of how he should give praise to himself as well, and Killian was just as reluctant to do so as Liam was to praise his own self. "Well I only happen to be good at what I do because of you." He was not about to dismiss that fact. "You raised me brother. So whatever praise you bestow on me is all accredited to you. For without you, I would be nothing." With their mother's passing at such a young age, and their father's abandonment, Liam was truly the only family that Killian ever had. He had been a parent, a brother . . . everything to Killian all at once. "Which is why I want you to be happy. For you deserve it." More than words could say.
He then seemed to realize Killian's words as he spoke of how any woman would be lucky, and how Liam described it, further showed Killian just how his brother felt toward Elizabeth. He then spoke of how she was a free spirit. How they would have to be away from her for so long. Whatever excuse his brother was going to present, Killian was prepared with a rebuttal. "That's the thing of it brother," he began to say. "We have grown up with Elizabeth. She knows of our departures and tell me, has there ever been one time where she was not waiting for us with open arms? Has she ever shown bitterness or resentment toward us for our absences?" The clear answer was no.
"Would you not want a wife who accepts you, all of you, for who you are? She is well aware of our past, and of our work." And the last topic Liam had raised . . . was whether she loved him in return. "I know the two of you perhaps better than you know yourselves," Killian said teasingly. "She cares for you the same way. And if you want her to be truly happy, which I am inclined to believe that you do, then you will not forsake her. You would not condemn her to live a life with another man whom she does not love." If Liam could not do this for his own happiness, then Killian was going to use Elizabeth's happiness as further incentive. "You know her. And tell me, is she the kind of woman who would not value love above all else?" Questions that both he and Liam knew the answer to . . . which was why Killian had vocalized them: to allow his brother to reflect on the answer he already was well aware of, and take it into consideration.

His brother, always prepared to set his head straight and remind him of their childhood. He might have raised him, but eventually they had become equally caring about each other. As kids, Liam had done everything he could to feed him, even gave Killian a bit more to ensure he’d grow and be happy. As kids, he had done everything for Killian, only expecting a hug or two in return, which Killian had always freely given and so much more. Now they both gave each other equal support. Now, whenever Liam was injured, Killian effortlessly took over the entire household and nursed him back to health and vice versa.
“No… she always awaited us with open arms, eager to hear our stories.” And eager to check them for injuries or sicknesses. Not even that had kept her way from the both of us. She would indeed accept either of them unconditionally. With them she knew already what husband she would be getting. She would know exactly what would await her, so should she accept him to court her and to marry her, she knew what would be ahead of her already. And he’d be damned if he didn’t try to better their position through hard work. Though he still doubted, even as Killian said he knew them, even as he claimed Elizabeth felt the same. What if he saw the right signs, but misjudged them because she loved Killian, not him? Who in their right mind would not fall for a handsome young man like Killian, but the serious brother instead?
“Of course she values love above all, I know that Killian. And I know she’d rather marry for love than for position. Iknow that. But what if you’re wrong? What if she’s fallen for you, not me?”

a hero's journey
THAT IS INDEED GOOD FORM Killian knew this was what was needed; hearing each concern of his brother's so that the younger Jones sibling could squash each one and leave no doubt in Liam's mind. He agreed that Elizabeth always awaited them with open arms and an eagerness to hear their stories. He gave a small nod in acknowledgment, already prepared for what his next doubt may be. Liam agreed that Elizabeth values love above all else, and that she would rather marry for love than position . . . he then suggested the idea of Elizabeth being in love with him. The idea caused Killian to scoff with amusement and let out a small chuckle, before his expression turned serious again.
"Oh my apologies, you were serious about that?" He said teasingly, before his lips curved into a smile. He had been prepared for many of Liam's doubts and concerns . . . but not that one. Why? Because he knew Liam was a better man than he was. "Indeed, it is true that I love Elizabeth and that she loves me," Killian began to say as he casually put an arm around his brother's shoulders, as if entertaining the idea but then further explained what he really meant, for his words were indeed sincere. "But as a brother and sister love one another," he stated. "Which is drastically different than the love you and her have for one another." They were in love with each other. "Trust me, brother. I am as sure that she loves you, as I was that you love her prior to your admittance." And now the next -- and final -- step was to get them to admit it to each other.

This was so typically Killian, but he knew, he knew he always loved Elizabeth like a sister, had done so for a very long time. They basically grew up together, both being allowed to be children more than Liam had been, he had always felt the responsibility for Killian, yet never regretted it, because he loved his little brother ever since he held the squirming infant for the first time. He could never regret anything with him. Liam smiled at him, still nervous about all of it. What if for once Killian was wrong? What if for once he misinterpreted this?
“How do you know, Killian? How do you know all of that?” He must have a clue as to why, an idea as to why he thinks Elizabeth loved him. Of course with him it must be easy, he had known him all his life, from the day he was born he had known Liam as a steady presence in his life, never faltering in who he was or his worry about him. Of course he’d know what he felt, he was probably a very open book to him. But Elizabeth? How did he know about her?
