Captain Liam Jones watched as the water slowly turned red. It was not a sight he liked, but one he had to endure. Now, less than before. His stomach had gotten to the sight and smell of blood, as it coated his clothing often. Like his brother, he had switched to blacks and dark colors, which was more handy with the blood stains than the white and beige navy uniform they previously wore. Slowly all men trickled back to the ship, finishing whatever skirmish they had been engaged in previously. Originally the captain had intended to try to avoid as much bloodshed as possible.
Liam had just put his scabbard away as he helped a few men back on board. “Be careful of the water. Half of you rats can’t swim and with the amount of the blood in the water only idiots will dive after you to save you.” He knew any shark close by could smell the massacre. They’d use it and at least try human. Even if they didn’t specifically kill humans, a single bite could end a life. “Where’s my first mate?” He couldn't spot him among the people climbing back on board. Knowing him, he was right in the back, helping someone.

It's Always Nice TO MAKE AN IMPRESSION The smell of blood was thick in the air as the pool of it spread in the waters. The men were boarding on the ship and Killian was there, helping them. The scene was quite a morbid one, not suited for anyone without a strong stomach. He could already see the unease on one of the crewmen's face. Ever since they had embraced a life of piracy, things had been quite different. They still had a code, and still held honor in it . . . but they did not serve the King. They were not bound by laws. Killian had even cut his hair so that he cut ties to his former status, hating the royal who's cruel mission had nearly taken his brother's life. And now, he was a pirate. They all were.
"I can't get it off me!" Killian looked at one of the men who was trying to wipe away the blood that stained his clothes. He was getting a bit hysterical; most likely from the trauma of recent events. "Calm yourself, Sailor," Killian told him, nearing his side. "It won't get off! Get off!" Killian reached out to put his hands on the man's shoulders when he started frantically waving them, pushing Killian back and into the water. The first mate immediately brought his head to surface, keeping himself above water as he looked up at the ship.
"MAN OVERBOARD!" Someone yelled out. He could see the others start to get the rope ready to toss over. He was about to swim closer to the ship, when he suddenly felt something tug him underwater. He felt a sharp pain from whatever was forcing him down and he tried to use his other foot to kick it off . . . which seemed to somewhat work for he was released and immediately began to swim back up to get his head above the water. He gasped for the much needed air, his eyes darting around him to see where the creature had gone. The fin protruding from the water caused Killian to freeze, as the predator circled its prey.
"Captain . . . " He called out to urge the men to hurry and drop the rope. But it was too late. The blood had been far too much of an attraction and a sudden overbearing pain took over Killian. He froze for a moment, the shock of the event just causing him to freeze before fresh blood began to surround his arm. He felt numb, and the pain caused dizziness to start to set in. He wasn't sure how, but he reached for the rope with his hand and was hoisted up onto the ship. One not all of him returned, for the shark had bit off Killian's left hand.

Liam barely heard the yell as he had turned to help an injured sailor to sit on a turned over crate. He had intended to inspect the wound no matter what, but he cared for his crew. The injured man would remain where he sat unless something very severe happened. With a good amount of people unable to swim, he had to see who it was. From the distance it could have been Killian and that boy could swim, he was very sure of that since he had observed his swimming lessons with their mother, even joined in to motivate the little tyke back then. Then, though, all hell broke loose. He saw as his brother, a good swimmer, disappeared from the surface. All alarmbells in his mind began to ring. What he feared could be attracted had been attracted! Sharks in the water. And one of them got Killian already! Damn it. Liam ran to get as close as possible to where Killian had just been released again. He heard his brothers call. To his own surprise it was calm, collected as if he was just casually calling for them to get him out.
“Get him out!” he barked at the men, but it was too late. The shark got him again. He braced himself for the unimaginable pain of seeing Killian disappear again, but it didn’t come. All he saw was the water turn a little darker and then as if time slowed down his brother had the rope in his hand and the men, almost as frantic as Liam to get Killian back, pulled. They pulled him aboard almost straight into Liams arms. This way he was the first to assess the damage done on his brother: His hand was gone. Instead he saw torn flesh, bone and a lot of blood. Now, of all the times, he was glad of his training. He undid his belt and tied it around Killians upper arm as tightly as possible.
“Killian? Can you hear me? Where does it hurt, baby brother? Where does it hurt, tell me.” He still motioned for the men to help him carry him down, into the Captains quarters. As if on cue the man, who used to come in rank after him and Killian started to bark orders to get ready to set sail. Liam only left Killians side to ask for someone to fetch the medicinal supplies and generous amounts of rum. “Killian, rum or sleeping? This is gonna hurt.”

It's Always Nice TO MAKE AN IMPRESSION Hearing his brother's voice provided him with instant comfort, for he always felt safer around Liam. He heard him ask if he could hear him, and where it hurt. Killian kept his eyes closed, tightly squeezing them shut as he felt the pain yet did not want to make a sound from it. "My left hand," he explained. "It feels, strangely numb." He attempted to flex his fingers, not yet realizing that his hand was completely gone, for he still felt it there.
"How bad is it?" He asked him, knowing that his captain would tell him the truth. He didn't want it sugar coated, he wanted to hear the full severity of the wound. Liam then asked him a question that caused Killian to give a faint smile, trying to find light in this gruesome situation. "How about the rum for now?" He asked. He used to abhor the beverage but ever since embracing a life of piracy, he tended to indulge in the drink more often.
"If my Captain is alright with a drunk sailor?" He added on with a chuckle, that turned into a strained cough. He tried to steady his breathing, knowing he would have to brace himself with the pain that was to come. He was feeling dizzy, perhaps a bit delirious from the pain and shock of everything. But Liam was here, and everything would be alright. For his presence gave Killian an instant solace even in the most horrid of situations.

Liam knew he probably visibly paled as Killian spoke about how numb his left hand felt. Of course the hand felt numb, it was gone; it was not the hand Liam was worried about, it was the wound he was left behind. For now he knew Killian might not even make the connection or fully understand it, while he was in this state of shock. Telling him could be quite useless. He would have to break the news to him later. For now saving his life had to be Liams priority. He would not lose his brother, no matter how long they had to stay in this room, fighting for his life, he’d not move from his side.
“Very bad, I’m afraid, Killian. Very bad.” He didn’t believe in lying, his brother had to know it was bad. “You… you’re not over the worst yet, far from it. P... please don't die, Killy” He might die from it, Liam had no illusions about that, but he couldn’t voice it, only his concern for his brother. Rum would be the first then, to numb him. He did not give it to him himself. One of the men held Killians head up and let him drink while Liam and another could take care of the wound. He was surprised how easily they all fell into a certain rhythm, preparing what they would need to do whatever they could to safe Killian.
“Killian, concentrate on me, okay? You tell me if something is wrong, tell me everything.” He slipped his hand into Killians remaining, hoping that could help him a little. Then Liam nodded to the others to start treating the wound. He watched in horror, hand now placed on Killians chest to hold him down with others, as they pulled out a tooth from the maimed flesh. He could not tear his gaze away as torn flesh was cut off, bone formed and finally the wound cleaned. But it was about to get worse. They left it to Liam to tell his brother of the next step. “We have to cauterize the wound now.”
