Gold is a cripple, he walks with the help of a cane. As the Dark One Rumple has curly hair, and greeny skin, amber eyes, dresses with some eccentric clothes

.:Personality:. Mr. Gold is a polite, cold, manipulative, influential, sinister person. Basically "a hard person to love" but he can surprise sometimes, some very rare times. As the Dark One, Rumplestiltskin is cruel, scarcastic, eccentric, playful, funny (if you have a dark sense of humor), manipulative, selfish fella.

As the Dark One, Rumplestiltskin is pratically unbeatable, being able to pratice any lign of dark magic, his only weekness is The Dark One's dagger and his love for Belle. Gold may be just an injured gentleman but still carried all the knowledge obtained during all his centuries alive.

Rumplestiltskin life was never "a fairy tale". Since his childhood he had to deal with misery, with a absent crooked father, who ended up leaving him, his own child for a... let's say... better life?

Rumple decided to be different from his father and left his pregnant wife to serve his army, even if it was a suicidal mission.
Thanks to a Seer, he finded out that he was indeed in a suicide mission and injured his own leg so he could be sent home, to his pregnant wife Milah, and his baby to born: Bealfire.

Milah never accepted her cripple coward husband and ran away with the pirate Killian Jones.
Hearbroken, Rumplestiltskin lived his life trying to be the best father he could to his son, Bealfire until he learned about the Dark One curse.
Rumple was able to defead Zoso and become the New Dark One. 
The coward was now the most powerful living creature, tired of being beaten by life, he was ready to strike back.
The good caring man became a monster, his wrong choices gave him power but also costed him his own son who now was lost in another land and his loved Belle who was killed, only because he was to coward to love her.

In order to be reunited with his son, The Dark One, waited for centuries and manipulated thousands to make the Evil Queen release the first curse, the one that would take him to the Land without magic, the Land where his son tried to take him. The land where Bael was. 
After so many years, after so much waiting, Rumple, now Mr. Gold's wrong choices made him loose his son, this time forever.
His obsession with strenght is his worst weekeness and almost cost him his life.

Now, he is no longer The Dark One, but is he enough to be the hero the new Dark One needs? 
He seriously doubts it.
