Regina managed to smile as she sipped her drink, seductively of course, but never-the-less pleased at the way Hook's eyes never strayed from her. Yes, she had his undivided attention; and, she relished it. What woman wouldn’t wish for such a handsome man to stare at her with wanting eyes? His agreement was suggestive which continued to excite her. There was this old familiar tingle working its way up her skin. She’d gotten bored with her heartless huntsman. He couldn’t thrill her the way he once had. Perhaps this captain could nourish her healthy appetite. As her hand sensually traveled down her body, she was satisfied with the way his eyes followed, pausing at certain spots. Her pleasure grew when he parted his mouth, running his tongue over his lips in an evocative way. Oh the things that the tongue could do...She grinned alluringly, just thinking about it! “Would you like to see Captain?” she asked, tone bewitching at the comment about what lay beneath her form fitted dress. She slipped a hand under her left sleeve and oh so slowly pulled it down until her bare shoulder was exposed. No, a shoulder wasn’t much. But there was no fun to be had in moving too quickly. It was best to leave some things up to the imagination, at least for a moment. When she leaned over and spoke, luscious apple red lips so close to his ear she was practically kissing it as her breath played across it, enticing words worming their way inside, Hook closed his eyes, likely to enhance the feel of everything, make her touch and her breath that much more intense and all consuming. He moved his hook to her back and the chill of the cool metal sent shivers down her spine. Hook caressed her back as her fingers continued to stroke his cheek, the light touch no doubt awakening strong desires inside the ruthless pirate. His voice was low when he told her to go on, the tone quite appealing. And the way his hook played across back...Well her own hunger was growing. He challenged her to motivate him and then his lips were pressed against her neck. She very much liked the feel of them against her skin. But...She thought she’d prefer them elsewhere. Regina roughly grabbed him by the hair, pulling his head back so he was once more at eye level. Then without hesitation she locked her lips against his, kissing him passionately, nimble fingers hurriedly pulling off his coat as she pressed him against the table, deepening the kiss.

Sharp amber orbs didn’t miss the way he lifted his chin and swallowed at the mention of his first love. Your first love...Was that someone anyone ever got over? Regina had a new love, a true love, someone who understood her better than Daniel ever had even before her heart grew dark and her soul twisted. And now, certainly no one could read her better than him. But Daniel wasn’t someone she’d ever forget. She tried not to think of him too much. It wasn’t healthy. And she was pretty good for the most part at playing the avoidance game. But now...When everything was falling apart, of course her thoughts would turn there, to that darkness and despair. When she’d stood there over Daniel’s corpse, pressing her lips against his, praying, hoping against hope that somehow true love’s kiss could work its magic and bring him back to her, she’d thought for sure she could never love anyone else but him. But Daniel hadn’t been cursed. So true love’s kiss had no power. It couldn’t restore a crushed heart. That night, it felt like the world had ended, like she’d lost absolutely everything. But here she was now with a life for herself. She had a son she loved dearly. And she had someone truly special, someone who understood her tortured heart. She wanted to believe in him. She wanted to feel that even with Marion here, after everything, he’d trust her, know that she’d truly changed. She didn’t want to lose everything not again! How many times did the world wish to reset the playing field?! She’d had Daniel and then Mother coldly and callously killed him. She’d had Jefferson then he’d chosen Snow. No...That was wrong! She’d finally come to understand it. He hadn’t chosen Snow. He’d chosen her! He’d been trying to save her kind heart, stop her from making a foolish mistake, letting vengeance drive her. But she’d been too lost in her quest for revenge to see it. She felt betrayed; but, he’d tried to be her savior, her redemption before she needed redemption. She wasn’t a villain anymore. She could see that clearly. “I have a new love too,” Regina said with a soft smile that crumpled so quickly had Hook not been paying apt attention he would have missed the expression entirely. “I hope..He can trust me.” Please..Please believe in her! If she had his support, she could handle anything! She could be strong! She chuckled when he said he had to believe in her. So the belief was selfish? Well she could take that. The two of them...They weren’t villains anymore. But she still wasn’t sure if they qualified as heroes. And well...Maybe it was okay to be a little selfish. “Do you honestly think you’ve screwed up as badly as I have?” she asked curiously. What chance did someone like him have at redemption? She felt his odds certainly had to be better than hers. She’d never fallen to Mother’s depths; but, she’d become a monster herself, letting her wrath, frustration, and deep seeded despair fuel her actions. She closed off her heart and gave into rage and desperation. His slight smile coupled with the “I know” set her nerves somewhat at ease. So, at least she had one person on her side, one person who didn’t assume the absolute worst because of Marion. She offered Hook a small smile. “Thanks,” she said softly. He was right. She shouldn’t let everyone rattle her so. What did the heroes know about redemption anyways?! They’d never needed it! She did; but, she could make it! She’d changed!

“So then which world did you send it in?” she teased. He wanted to play games, she’d play games. But...It was always fun to think about all the places he traveled. Regina had been privy to all 17 of them when they were together. She’d even risked a very quick visit to Wonderland, just to say they’d been there. If memory served, they’d spent all of two minutes there before Regina’s nerves caught up to her and she squeezed Jefferson’s hand, begging him to take her back before Mother found them. Such a scared little sentimental thing she’d been back then. She was much stronger now and had no need of someone like Jefferson any longer. She could take care of herself, look after her own heart! But back then...Yes, she’d been a little fool in love. Jefferson loved his work; and, she adored his travels. She found him and the magic he worked with magnificent. The hat was something clearly near and dear to his heart. Regina had loved it in its own right and because it was so precious to Jefferson. So she’d been bound and determined to go through all the doors at least once, touch the other side. She wanted to share that intimacy with Jefferson. And there was that teasing sarcasm Regina had always cherished. But now it was different. The words weren’t as smooth and light hearted. She supposed both of them had grown up. It didn’t do to dwell on dreams. And that’s all the two of them had ever shared, nothing tangible, nothing real. It was best that he’d made that final break. Regina had been weak. She couldn’t have done it on her own. But he’d left and never come back after that last argument. But that was fine with her! No, that was better than fine! That was wonderful! Because she didn’t need someone like him, someone who would always betray her trust and let her down! He was the one who’d taught her to trust no one! And she was grateful for the lesson! “If I’m unpredictable what does that make you?” Her tone was cheerful; but, there was a slightly bitter undercurrent that someone like Jefferson should be able to hear, knowing her all too well. He was the type that could just keep running. Run so far and run so fast. If there was a plan, Regina never quite got it. He was the sort to more..respond to things. And he was the one she couldn’t rely on. He’d told her he loved her! He promised to protect her, always be there for her! But he’d chosen Snow and now Lyall! His heart was the one that had strayed! She was an idiot for ever believing in him, for ever caring and..No! She hadn’t ever wished for things to be different for Jefferson to change his mind! His wedding was something to celebrate! There would be no more wondering, no more questions! This was his final answer! And she couldn’t be happier! Whatever naive part of her heart still beat for him, still cared, still craved his touch, she could smother it today! It should have been buried long ago! Jefferson was doing her a favor! And here he was trying to reject her gift! Not that wouldn’t do at all! And yes, she could hear the sarcasm quite clearly! Her presence was gift enough! A woman less composed than her would have squeezed his hand too tightly or perhaps missed a step. But Regina’s smile was fixed firmly in place; and, she gracefully moved in time with the waltz, never missing a beat. “Come now my dear Jefferson, surely you won’t deny a queen her pleasures!” Her tone was light and warm. But those who knew her well, Jefferson in this case, would easily discern the underlying threat. She wasn’t taking no for an answer! He would accept her gift if she had to rip out his wife’s heart to make him!

Jefferson was silent for a while. She wondered if he wouldn’t demand that she leave, say he cared nothing for her type of comfort. They had hardly parted on the kindest note. Perhaps in his grief, he’d rather be left alone. Regina had no idea how he felt about her after all this time. Didn’t she? He’d first chosen Rumplestiltskin, then Snow, then Lyall. How many times did it take her to get it? She’d never be first. But that hardly mattered anymore! She was under no delusion that the two of them would be together. Yes...Once upon a time she’d loved him with all her heart. But those days were long gone! He’d made his choice! So why...Why was she so worried about him right now?! It didn’t make sense! This had to be some sort of indigestion! Her heart had fluttered earlier. That was proof! He spoke and she nodded her head at his solemn words. “She did; but, this world is a cruel one Jefferson. Both of us know that all too well. What people deserve, they don’t necessarily get.” Her tone wasn’t harsh but surprisingly gentle for the ‘Evil Queen’. Hadn’t she deserved her happy ending with Daniel? And when her world had been turned upside-down that awful night, hadn’t she at least deserved some peace afterwards? Leopold brought her nothing but despair and misery. The only reason she’d clung to some semblance of sanity, had the briefest taste of hope was because of Jefferson. So..Didn’t she deserve to be happy with him at least? But no. That was not her fate. Every time she thought she held a little happiness in her hand, it was brutally and permanently pried from her fingers. “But one can be enough, Jefferson,” she said softly. “Mother...I would have been better off without her. We both know that. But because Father was there to wish for my happiness if nothing else, I didn’t break.” She’d say she turned out alright. She thought she had. But she didn’t mention that for fear of Jefferson’s disagreement. And right now, the last thing she wanted to do was fight. He was clearly having a difficult time. She didn’t want to get into Snow or her quest for vengeance or any of Jefferson’s betrayals. “I think it’s wonderful you want to protect your daughter. She’s lucky to have such a caring father,” she said tenderly. She wondered...Would her own father do this for her, sacrifice something he loved to keep her safe and happy? She wasn’t sure; and, the doubt saddened her. After all, he’d never once stood up for her when it counted, not against Mother or the king. And wishing only went so far. His verbal support had been a great comfort at moments because it was all she had. But that was the only thing he offered, words never action. He was too scared to help. So...She really didn’t know if he’d do the same in Jefferson’s position. Regina was honestly a bit concerned that Jefferson would draw back from her touch. But he didn’t and so her lips curled into a smile, eyes moistening slightly. It was nice to know that Jefferson didn’t completely hate her touch. And the fact that he didn’t break connection...That had to mean he believed her, at least a little! She really didn’t want Jefferson to suffer like this, as much as she’d disliked Lyall and thought her the poorest of choices, someone unworthy of Jefferson’s affections. She beamed at his thanks, clearly discerning the sincerity in his words, and that smile that flicked across her face had a type of innocence and purity not seen in her features for some time now. Yes, besides her clothes, for a moment, she was the spitting image of the naive queen Jefferson had first met. He broke eye contact, cleared his throat, and casually pulled his hand back. The separation stung more than she thought it would, as much as she knew such a gesture couldn’t last forever. But the touch had given birth to a sweet dream, beautiful in its brevity. But it came so quickly and left so suddenly her mind didn’t have time to process exactly what it had been. And still, she felt its loss like a physical blow. Her lips shifted downward and for a moment, she looked absolutely devastated. But just for a split second. She quickly rearranged her features, donning the composed regal mask of queen. What brought her to the market? She didn’t want to lie; but, she didn’t care to mention Snow either. Snow was the last straw between them. She didn’t wish to remind either of them of such bitter tidings. But Jefferson was never one she cared to lie to. “When I lived with Mother...I always wanted to go out and see the market,” she said softly, queen mask melting away like candle wax held up to to a flame, revealing a more tender and fearful expression. Mother had scoffed at Regina’s request time and time again, saying the market was for peasants; and, they had servants to buy their food and whatever else they wished for. Mother didn’t understand...It wasn’t just the market...Regina wanted to venture into the world, leave the estate if only for a short time. She wanted to meet new people. “But I couldn’t.” Her tone was a little more crushed than she would have liked. So many times she’d tried to sneak away, to get out for a bit. But mother always caught her. She never made it as far as the market. “Leopold wouldn’t let me either.” He almost never let her leave the castle grounds, only when there was some event she need attend as queen. And Market certainly didn’t qualify. “No, I’m not specifically here for the mushrooms. But finally..I can see it! I’m out here so I thought I should. Is that so strange?” She supposed he would think it was. She was a queen after all. And Jefferson didn’t know her, not anymore.

“Oh you couldn’t begin to imagine!” Her tone was playfully evocative as she reached a hand across the table to lay on top of his, squeezing it once for good measure before quickly drawing it back to her glass and raising it to her lips, taking an oh so slow and suggestive sip, making sure he got a fine look at her luscious red lips. No, Regina didn’t mind being forward. Waiting for a man to make the first move was so old fashioned. Regina preferred to play by her own rules. Oh yes that devious smile was attractive. Her own lips curled into a flirtatious smirk. “The sadistic ones have all the fun!” Her eyes never left his face as he sipped from his own glass. Yes, he was certainly something to look at. She approved! His confidence was both reassuring and enticing. No, Regina cared little for the shy, quiet types. She liked her men bold and daring, with a flair for the theatrical. Hook clearly met all those requirements. He could likely feed her appetite. “I’m adept in two things. Surviving and magic.” Well those two could be considered one and the same. Her magic certainly helped the survival aspect. But she had managed to live through Mother with no magic to boast of. That was before Rumple had trained her. So that was something. She gestured dramatically to her dress, hand lingering near her breasts for a beat before waving its way down the rest of her outfit. “Make that three things! Stunning outfits!” Yes, she prided herself on her taste in clothes. The queen should wear the very best; and, she wasn’t talking money but pure style! Just because an outfit was expensive didn’t mean it was any good. In her humble opinion, she rocked the Evil Queen getup. “It depends on whose first!” she teased, tone playing off his suggestion. She simply smiled seductively back at him when he assured her he wouldn’t fail. She certainly hoped that would be the case. An outraged Mother was not something Regina wanted to contend with. Regina leaned across the table so that her face was nearly pressed against his, slender fingers reaching up to stroke his cheek, lips hovering just above his ear. “Well then...Let me motivate you my dear captain. This is very important after all.”

Hook didn’t answer right away, giving Regina time to explain what she truly meant. Even after that he was quiet for a minute. She wondered if he was going to try and dodge the question or if he was just considering it seriously. Not everyone had forgiven him? She supposed that was true. Snow and Charming still regarded him with suspicion although she would assume with less than they threw her way. But then...That was fair. Hook hadn’t personally wronged either of those Chramings. Regina, on the other hand, had quite the record of making them suffer. She’d lost track of just how many times she’d tried to murder or otherwise traumatize Snow White. Charming had never been concerned. He only got hurt to get to Snow either because he was in the way, trying to protect her or because he was Snow’s heart. Just as Hook had Once told Emma, he hurt Rumple’s heart, Belle was just where he kept it, the same logic applied to Snow and Charming. Although for the most part, Regina had tried to leave Charming out of it. She’d only abducted him once to goad Snow into eating a cursed apple. It wasn’t that she had any love for Charming, far from it. She found him simple minded and tiresome. She’d been sincere when she asked Snow if she was really going to marry that. Besides, the pretty face, she really didn’t see the appeal. Guy was about as charming as a brick as far as she was concerned. He was tactless and dim-witted, a bad mix. The only real skill he had was with a blade. But why bother with that? Snow could fight well enough with her bow and arrow. No, she'd tried to leave Charming out of it because well...She knew how it felt to have a lover harmed. And...Even at her worst, she supposed she hadn't been entirely willing to put Snow through that. It probably reminded her too much of Daniel. But yes, for the most part, people seemed to give Hook the benefit of the doubt. They let him wander off on his own even in Neverland. When Regina broke off from the party, they’d been much more concerned. And when Emma suspected there was an issue with her and Tinkerbell...Well let’s just say she’d been less than understanding. Even now, everyone was so quick to jump on her past sins. Did they love rubbing salt in her wounds so much?! She was trying to redeem herself! She wanted that more than anything! She couldn’t take back her mistakes! All she could do was move forward! She stared at Hook stunned, startled by his honestly when he admitted that he might not have forgiven himself. Regina nodded her head slowly. “I get that.” She wasn’t sure she’d ever forgive herself. Sometimes she wondered if she even deserved a happy ending after all the suffering she’d caused. But, she didn’t have all that much time to contemplate her own sense of forgiveness because she was constantly confronted by others’ lack of acceptance and understanding. Even if she didn’t entirely believe she deserved happiness, she’d defend herself! She’d be damned if anyone tried to tell her who she was or what she could get! Now she had the power to make choices for herself! And she wouldn’t let anyone else control what she was! At her weaker moments, she’d wonder what Daniel would think. He’d loved Regina for her kind heart. He’d hate what she'd become, how she’d grown obsessed with vengeance. He never would have wanted her to hurt Snow White. Would even he be able to forgive her? Storybrooke was a small town; and, news traveled fast. Given the outburst between Belle, Hook, and Rumple, she’d learned about Milah. “Do you ever worry you disappointed your first love?” she asked softly. Regina knew nothing about Milah. Maybe Milah loved the whole pirate package. But having someone rip your true love’s heart out right in front of you, crushing it before your very eyes...Regina knew better than anyone else how that traumatized a person, tainted them, ripping away whatever innocence they’d once had. Well...Not all at once. Afterwards...Regina had still been innocent. She’d lost it bit by bit, as the world continued to rain cruelty down upon her. Evil wasn’t born. It was made. Regina nodded her head in firm agreement when he spoke of their sordid pasts. Yes...There was regret, so much she could drown in it. “Do you really believe that? Is someone like me redeemable?” She’d really been working towards redemption. She’d been better! It was easy for him to talk about strength of resolve! He wasn’t the one being tested right now! No, he was the one who’d proven himself a hero. And you know what...Regina had too! She’d defeated Zelena with light magic! But that was all forgotten the moment Marion set foot in Storybrooke! “I’m not a villain anymore,” she said bitterly. The question was, would anyone believe that?

“A woman has her ways,” she responded with a flirtatious smile when Hook commented on her knowledge. Yes, Regina had done her research or at least had others look into the matter for her. She’d been thinking of coming to Hook for some time now. With his reputation, she thought perhaps he could give her what she wanted, her mother’s death. But in the end he found her. Well saved her the trouble of a trip anyways. And Pirates could be such pesky things to pin down, always on the move. Hook’s sarcasm reminded her a bit of another dashing man, someone she used to know and love. But it didn’t do to dwell on him. He was trapped in another land. And there he would stay. He had to for this to work. “Oh you should be. I don’t pay this much attention to just any man!” Her tone had a teasingly seductive note to it. Yes, he was certainly handsome. And this one seemed to be more than just a pretty face. There were wits there too. And she did so like the way his gaze lingered. He had sharp, penetrating eyes, vibrant blue in color. Again...Her thoughts drifted where they shouldn’t. His eyes...They weren’t quite like this but of a similar color and intensity, eyes that spoke of dreams and adventure but eyes that were..haunted somehow. Enough of that! Hook wasn’t him! And she wouldn’t care even if he was! She was done with him! That was why she could so easily leave him behind after all! “My, my, aren’t we confident?” she asked, a smirk playing across her lips. Of course confidence was very much desirable when one was about to face down the Queen of Hearts. If he was nervous to begin with, he’d likely turn tail and run when he saw what Mother could do. “You’re the first,” she said smoothly. “I was careful with my choice as I’m hoping for the first to be the last. You see if you fail, things will get messy on my end as well. I’d like to avoid that.”

Regina just rolled her eyes at his cocky, “I know”. But honestly, she felt relieved. It was good to know that some things just never changed. Villain or...something resembling a hero like her, Hook still loved his rum (really alcoholic beverages in general) and was still arrogant as anything. Had the two of them made the transition from villains to heroes? She still wasn’t sure. Back in Neverland, Regina had certainly been the most sketchy of the heroes. She needed to get her son back. So she was willing to get her hands dirty, do the tough but necessary work the others couldn’t stomach. She supposed being an ex-Evil Queen had its perks. Although she’d always detested the title, never viewing herself as such. But yes, she’d ripped out a boy’s heart to send a message to Henry. Snow had been less than pleased with that development. Emma actually had to restrain her mother so Regina could take care of things. But it had been for a good cause! And yes, she’d returned the heart! As always, Regina had a soft spot for children, even the lost boys. Thankfully Pan himself was no child but some demon spawn who was actually older than Rumplestiltskin. He’d been an adult apparently before he’d ever come to Neverland. So her sympathy was nowhere he could get at it, certainly not after he’d had her son abducted! With Zelena, Regina supposed things had been a bit clearer. She’d come to a witch fight she’d been convinced she would lose, twice. But she did it so Zelena wouldn’t destroy the town Regina had built herself. As much as everyone loathed her, as mayor as well as magical creator, she was still responsible for Storybrooke’s well being. She wouldn’t let her half-sister dismantle the town, her one true home. Here she had Henry and Jefferson and Grace as well given things with Jefferson. (Grace was really so sweet, kind and caring! Jefferson had done a good job raising her.) She didn’t want to lose that, their trust and affection. Would Marion ruin everything?! At least Hook was still on speaking terms with her. And he wasn’t staring at Regina like she was one gigantic walking, talking time bomb. She was sick of those suspicious glances! A few angry words and how quick everyone was to doubt her! She wasn’t that person anymore, hadn’t been for some time! She was no longer the Evil Queen! Could she never escape that reputation?! If she was good for a thousand years would people still find reason to question her intentions?! Yes, Regina bet it had been one hell of a night for him too. No one was throwing the word monster in his direction; but, he’d traveled back in time. That couldn’t be easy. If Regina had been sucked into that mess of a portal, she’d have been terrified of tampering with the time space continuum or whatnot. Time travel was..Well no one knew all that much about it. If she had been there, every second she’d worry about distorting the time stream. No...Reading the butterfly short story would not have helped her nerves. As it was...Besides Marion ruining her life right now, she was concerned about what effect her presence had on things. Was she supposed to have done something back in the Enchanted Forest? Did Emma and Hook change something crucial? There was no point in vocalizing these questions as Hook wouldn’t know any better than her. And she had enough on her plate already. Really...She didn’t want to spare another thought for Marion. Although she very much doubted her mind would cooperate. She somewhat sullenly nodded her head at Hook’s offer. The Rabbit Hole was hardly a place she frequented. Regina preferred drinking in the privacy of her own home. But she was too stressed to return home now. She was too scared to meet Jefferson or Grace. And Hook was right. Everyone she was trying to avoid was fortunately at Granny’s. If she went to the Rabbit Hole they wouldn’t trouble her. However if she immediately went home...She could just see one of the Charmings banging on her door, either demanding to know if she was okay or what she was up to. And she didn’t want to talk to any of them now! They didn’t get it, didn’t understand! And they all suspected her! She hadn’t done anything wrong! She wasn’t the idiot who’d jumped in a time portal and then dragged someone back! Regina sighed. “Is it nice, having someone like me around, Hook?” she asked softly. “Your past is mostly a mystery. You were gone in Neverland for a while. But me...Everyone knows all about what I did as the Evil Queen. It must be so much easier to be forgiven, to be trusted when you’re standing next to me.” Regina was working hard to earn people’s trust. But for Hook, people always seemed to give him the benefit of the doubt. That was because of her wasn’t it? They’d look at Regina and then back to him and then think..Hey, at least he’s no Evil Queen.

Regina was a perceptive woman and so didn’t miss the raised eyebrow when she explained that the person Hook needed to kill was her mother. But if he thought he was getting a proper explanation out of her, he had another thing coming. Mother was...a private matter. There was no need to delve into the reasons behind the request. All Hook need do was kill her. Of course...She wasn’t sure the pirate was up to the task. Mother was an exceptionally powerful sorcerer, even more powerful than Regina if truth be told. Although she was loath to admit it. But it was worth a try, giving him this assignment. Should he fail, it would be no skin off her nose. She cared nothing for the man. Although she would admit he was plenty attractive. Worst case scenario, Mother would kill Hook and come through the portal alive and well. But as the world had never been merciful to Regina, she prepared for the worst even as she hoped for the best. So should Mother jump out of the hat, eager for some vengeance, Regina had things in place so she could immediately cast the curse. Mother wouldn’t have much time to wreck havoc. And once everyone was in a new land, not only would Mother be without magic, she wouldn’t even remember who she was. She’d be harmless. So things would work out fine either way. But Regina was really hoping Hook could eliminate the threat that was Mother. But she wouldn’t put too much stock into a pirate she’d never met. Tales could be exaggerated after all. Still, he had survived Neverland which was no small feat. (She should know as she’d traveled there several times with a certain portal jumper.) So he must be at least a little resourceful. And he had managed to break into her castle and kill one of her guards which was impressive. (No one had been able to fight their way past her defenses before.) Although she did feel bad about Claude. He was a loyal guard. But he was dead now. Nothing more could be done about that. All she could do was see to it that his death wasn’t in vain. She’d try to make good use of the pirate. She’d explained who he needed to kill and how the portal worked. But it seemed her good captain wasn’t content to leave just yet. But that was fine with her. She’d been vague. If he wanted more details, she could provide them. Although...Wonderland was difficult to explain to begin with. “You’ve survived Neverland so you have decent odds with Wonderland. It’s just as dangerous,” she assured him, taking a sip of her drink.

Why?! Why did things always end up like this?! Every time she thought she was about to get her happy ending, something got in the way. Even before she’d been labeled a villain, things had never turned out well. She’d watched Mother rip out her true love’s heart and crush it right before the two of them ran away together. He’d proposed to Regina, given her a ring and everything! She’d made him see that she would choose him over a king any day! He was the one she loved, he was the one she wanted to spend the rest of her life with! He was her happy ending! But Mother saw to that! There was to be no family with him, no joy, just confinement. Regina had made a mistake choosing to marry Leopold. Even with Mother gone..She just hadn’t known what else to do. Then when she thought with Jefferson she could be happy at least...Well...Things hadn’t gone so well there either. But now that the two of them had repaired their relationship, made it stronger than ever. So she didn’t wish for her thoughts to linger there. Then there was the curse. That was supposed to make her happy as it made Snow and everyone else who had ever wronged her suffer! But it wasn’t at all what she thought! It left a hole in her heart; and, she realized it for what it was when Owen came into her life. That little boy, the one who had sat in her seat and given her the gift..The one she still had even to this day even though he’d tortured her, strapped her to that awful table and electrocuted her...She still had it. She hated what he’d grown into. But she’d be forever grateful to that little boy who saved her, showed her just what she was missing. After he’d left...She hadn’t been ready to try adoption. She was too afraid of rejection. She wasn’t emotionally ready. But he’d planted the seed, telling her she’d have made a great mother. And when she was ready, she’d gotten Henry. Owen couldn’t be her happy ending. And whatever she’d had at the time with Jefferson...That wasn’t really healthy for either of them. But at least she’d been under no delusion that that was her happy ending. So Henry...He was supposed to be that. But then Emma came to town; and, Regina panicked, terrified the woman was there to steal away her son. Yes...That had been her own fault. But...She’d just been scared! And now here...People were finally starting to accept her, acknowledge that she’d changed. And when everything was going well, Emma had to bring back Marion, someone Regina had supposedly planned on executing, not like she could remember. She’d...lost herself for a while. Her heart had hardened, turned black and bitter, consumed with hate for all that had been stolen. Back then...She’d done a lot of things she regretted. And now Marion was there to remind everyone of them all! Why?! She wasn’t that person anymore, wasn’t a villain! And how quickly everyone turned on her, assuming the worst. Hadn’t she earned a little good will by now?! She’d saved Storybrooke from detonating, willing to sacrifice herself to save her son. She’d helped protect everyone when it came to Neverland and Peter Pan. And when Pan cast the curse, she was the one who made the ultimate sacrifice, giving up her son so that everyone could be safe. She’d even erased all of his memories of her. Nothing had ever hurt so much! But she never thought she’d see him again. And she wanted him to be happy! And then Regina had stopped Zelena with what...Oh that’s right... LIGHT MAGIC! And still all because Emma had been an idiot, traveled back in time and brought someone back with her, everyone was questioning Regina’s loyalty! Had Mother been right all along?! Would they never trust her?! Would even Jefferson be like that?! No! She wouldn’t accept that! She was going to believe in Jefferson! Surely at least he would accept that she’d changed for good. She knew that the smart thing to do would be to seek him out, run to him now. But she was too upset. Deep down, she was scared he would stare at her the same way everyone else did. Monster...That’s what Marion had called her. And no one was willing to jump to her defense. Maybe if Jefferson had been there...But he wasn’t one for social events. Really...She wasn’t either. But she got to see so little of her son these days. He was there so, she’d wanted to be there too for him. Incredibly upset, she’d wandered into the woods. The woods spoke of freedom and had always been a great source of comfort to her. There was a forest just outside Mother’s estate. But Regina was hardly ever allowed to leave. And then later...Barriers were put up so she couldn’t. Leopold barely let her step foot outside the castle. But when he traveled and she could slip away, she just loved the sense of secrecy about the woods. There she felt she could do anything, be herself. She could hide away and just pretend she didn’t have to go back to either Mother’s estate or the castle. She could delude herself into thinking she was free for a short time. The forest had always been something of a safe haven to her. So she came to it now, hoping it would clam her down. Because clearly some dumb blond didn’t get when a woman needed space! “Not now, Swan,” apparently didn’t register! Hook at least told everyone to give her space after things blew up! He was the only one there who seemed willing to consider her feelings! Space was definitely good! Well...Apparently he didn’t think she needed all that much space. Soon he was approaching her, offering to buy her a drink. But as he hadn’t assumed the worst or called her a monster, she was more willing to talk to him. And it felt less like he’d come to babysit her, make sure she didn’t do something evil and more like...She didn’t even know. Was he worried about her? Was that what this was? He offered to buy her a drink; and, she was honestly tempted. Some alcohol might do her good about now. She actually chuckled when he mentioned the pirate within him and rum. The two of them had a bit of history; and, yes she remembered his fondness for rum very well. She never saw him without his flask. But now she was grateful for it. Regina accepted the flask. “Rum sounds really nice about now.” She took a sip, her lips curling up into a smile. “You have good taste.” Or maybe she was feeling so lousy anything would taste wonderful. But she wasn’t complaining. She needed something to take the edge off this evening. She chuckled again. “Something stronger might not be a bad idea. It’s been one hell of an evening!” She just wanted to forget all about it!

He had his reasons?! Well clearly! For as long as Regina had known Jefferson, he’d loved his work to death! He wouldn’t quit on a whim! The question was, what had pushed him so far; and, would he tell her? They hadn’t exactly been close recently. Regina had worked with him a few times after his marriage; but, that was about it. She didn’t seek him out but rather tried to keep her distance especially after she found out about Grace. A child...Jefferson had a child with another woman! Regina...Regina had always wanted to settle down and have a family with someone she loved. Once upon a time she’d thought that person would be Jefferson. But she’d been wrong. But still..It irked her, the thought of Jefferson having a kid with someone who wasn’t her. Of course she was long past such silly feelings now! Besides, Jefferson had clearly changed! He’d decided to give up his travels so he could forage for fungus! She was being kind here though so she wouldn’t say that. Jefferson looked...Well not really happy. Was that because of her? Or was he regretting his decision to hang up his hat? No...That couldn’t be it. If that was the issue, he’d simply change his mind again. “And they would be?” she pressed. She wouldn’t be satisfied until she got a real answer. She stared at Jefferson stunned when he said Grace lost her mother because of his work. So...Lyall? Lyall was dead?! Regina was overwhelmed by a sense of grief not for a woman she’d loathed and deemed unworthy for someone of Jefferson’s caliber but for Jefferson. Her heart might have grown colder since last they spoke; but, she knew this pain all too well. Daniel had chosen Regina. He’d opened up his heart to her and he’d loved her with everything he had. And because of that, because of Regina, he had to die. She’d loved him back and wanted to be with him. She was willing to throw everything away, every advantage to stay by his side. And that Mother couldn’t allow. He’d been innocent; but, he’d suffered, paid the ultimate price because Regina had tried to run away, had attempted to leave Mother and the king behind. He hadn’t done anything wrong. But his story was cut tragically short all because of Regina. That was a burden she still bore to this very day. To think Jefferson would have to endure that agony, that grief! The world was cruel indeed! Regina was at a loss for words. What...What could she possibly say? Nothing could have prepared her for Daniel’s murder. And if it hadn’t been for Jefferson...She wasn’t sure how she would have originally coped with the sorrow. Father didn’t want to hear about it. It made him uncomfortable. All he wanted was for her to go along with Mother’s plans because it would be easier for him. He couldn’t deal with conflict. Whatever had happened between her and Jefferson...She’d always be grateful for the support he gave her when she was at her weakest. Regina hoped his daughter Grace could offer that same tender stability. Regina would never approve of Lyall. But she wouldn’t be so cold as to think Jefferson shouldn’t grieve her loss. Whatever her faults, she had been Jefferson’s wife. Of course he should mourn! And if his work was responsible for Lyall’s loss..Then it only make sense he quit. Nothing was worth losing a loved one. But...She was still a bit concerned for Jefferson. Enemies didn’t evaporate with time. Whoever had come after Lyall...Would they be content to stop there? Was Grace in danger?! Although Regina had detested Lyall, the same bitter feelings did not extend to her daughter. Regina had a soft spot for children. Even at her worst, she’d never hurt a child. And she knew she never would. Although she tried to keep that to herself. It was a weakness and she knew it. It wouldn’t do for anyone to capitalize on it. Regina still didn’t know what to say to Jefferson. I’m sorry...That simply didn’t cover it! And would he even believe her? He had to know she never cared for Lyall. She simply nodded her head at his words. “A daughter should have a father.” As weak willed as her own father had been, he’d at least wished for her happiness. He wasn’t willing to stand up to Mother for her. But all the same he loved her. And his tenderness saved Regina. Without him and Daniel, perhaps Mother would have broken her spirit. But because of the two of them, because she knew they did like her the way she was, she could be strong and be herself not the doll Mother wished her to be. Regina paused before hesitantly placing a hand over Jefferson’s own. “I am sorry,” she said softly, wondering if he would believe her or if he’d heard the title ‘Evil Queen’ one too many times to take her words seriously.

“Seventeen to be exact,” she teased at his comment about traveling between realms which was of course sarcastic. He wouldn’t mail a wedding invitation to someone in any other world but this one. Well not unless they lived in another realm. But then he’d likely just personally invite them since they’d need his assistance to attend the wedding anyways. No they both knew he’d never sent a wedding invitation. And they both knew why. Simply put, he hadn’t wanted her to come. Well tough! Here she was! Although...She really shouldn’t be here. She still couldn’t understand why she’d bothered. The news of his wedding should have been enough. Their story had ended long ago. This..This was some sort of epilogue for Jefferson. He meant nothing to her! It was best that she kept her distance! But she’d come so she couldn’t very well leave without sharing a dance and perhaps speaking with Lyall. Although just watching the naive little ditz was enough to churn her stomach. So maybe not. She’d see how she felt. “I’m a woman of mystery!” she replied to his remark about him thinking she’d have no desire to come. She shouldn’t have had any interest in coming! Really, what had she been thinking?! Of course he would have forgotten the promise he’d made to her so long ago by now. It would have been so simple for him to ask someone else the same question! The only solace she had was even if he should use the same words, he couldn’t possibly have used the same ring! That..that still belonged to her, the proof of the time they’d spent together. Oh goodness! She was being sentimental! The thought was sickening! See?! This was why she shouldn’t have come! Jefferson...Even after all this time, he could still make her head spin, make her emotional. Why should she give him such power over her?! She was done with him! This...This was why she’d come! She’d hammer it into the ground. There was nothing more between them! He’d moved on, made his choice. If she hadn’t done so already, she must now do the same! Love was weakness and he would not, could not be hers! It wasn’t the first time he’d been proven wrong. He thought he’d stay with her forever, until death due them part. Or...Was that all a lie?! Had he never intended to marry her? Was he always so willing to deceive her?! He’d lied about the experiment and then gone and chosen Snow! Well..It didn’t matter now! He could keep his damn reasons! They like him meant nothing to her! Even after all this time, Regina knew Jefferson well, better than almost anyone perhaps even his blushing bride. So she could easily discern the question in his statement. He wanted to know if she planned on causing trouble, hurting his wife. “Relax my dear Jefferson. I won’t spoil your special day. Far from it. I’ve come to give you two a gift!”

Jefferson didn’t exhibit any response at all to her words, not right away. He stood there as though deep in thought for a moment before casually moving his head back as though to ponder her response further. He said nothing and all she could do was wait, eyes still leaking tears, body still shuddering like there was no tomorrow. She couldn’t tell if her heart felt too tight or like it was about to explode from beating so furiously. She...Numb certainly wasn’t the word to describe her mental state. But there was so much she was thinking and feeling. Too much! The sheer enormity of the emotions overwhelmed her to the point where she couldn’t process any individual feeling. She didn’t know what she was feeling, what she was thinking, what she wanted. All there was was Jefferson and a response that could free her, make her heart a trifle lighter, or condemning words that could slit her throat and smother her heart for good, bleed it dry until nothing remained. No goodness. No hope. No anything. Nothing but despair. At his no, her heart plummeted. It literally felt like the air was being ripped from her lungs. No matter how much she inhaled...It was like she got nothing. Blood drummed loudly in her ears. Dizziness threatened to overcome her as Jefferson’s form swam before her eyes. It...Wasn’t right...Wasn’t quite straight. Just..She felt sick. And the tears kept right on coming. So..Her feelings didn’t matter at all to him. He didn’t care what she felt. That wasn’t enough. What...What did he want from her?! What did she want from him?! Why...Why had she thought for a second that he could save her?! She was long since lost. If her own son didn’t believe in her...She should have known no one else would. She’d never be forgiven. No one would ever trust her again. No one would ever look at her with tenderness in their eyes. She could die right here, right now and none would shed so much as a single tear. People would sigh in relief, knowing the Evil Queen was done. They’d never have to fear her again. Regina was in so much pain, it was difficult to concentrate on Jefferson’s words. But she’d come to him. He hadn’t kicked her out. And even as the whole world tossed and turned, she had a responsibility to hear him out. Jefferson..He was the one person Regina wanted to understand her heart. Maybe...She was a fool....But some part of her still clung to the hope that he could be convinced that she was innocent at least in this, that she’d had nothing to do with Archie’s death. And maybe...Maybe she could even persuade him to think she was redeemable. She’d changed once! He’d witnessed it! Couldn’t...Couldn’t he see her change back?! Didn’t he think it was possible?! He was a portal jumper! He’d seen so much in so many lands! Surely, he’d observed stranger things! At his lashing tone, the tears poured out faster still. Regina hadn’t thought she had so many tears locked up inside her. But she wept them freely now. Yes! She’d thought about how he felt as much as she’d tried to rationalize her care away, as much as she’d tried to avoid thinking of him all together! He was the one person she never wanted to hurt! She was weak. She was fragile. She had...nothing left to lose. Why not finally speak the truth after all these years? He already saw her for the pitiful wretch she was, someone with a blackened heart and twisted soul. There was no point in donning the brave, indifferent mask, the one of the powerful, imposing, regal queen. “You don’t understand Jefferson.” Her tone was broken, words spoken in the demeanor of one frustrated but thoroughly convinced she’d be unable to get someone to understand the truth of them. “Wonderland...The timing was right. Rumple had given me the Dark Curse some time back. Originally, I didn’t think I’d need to rely on it. But after so many failures, I began to consider it more seriously. I was starting to think that it might be the only way to get my happy ending. But...I know I don’t need to tell you all magic comes with a price. It mentioned a heart that needed to be sacrificed. I thought...I was scared! I thought I might have to sacrifice the heart of the thing I loved most! And..I knew it was you! I didn’t want to do that! But I knew I was weak! I thought..I thought at some point some failure would push me too far. In my grief or my rage, I’d be impulsive and cast the curse without a second thought. But..You’d have to die! I didn’t want to build my revenge on your corpse! When Father was abducted...I thought that was my chance. I could leave you in Wonderland in his place. You’d be safe! And then when I cast the curse you’d be reunited with your daughter. Jefferson, you’re alive because I ripped out Father’s heart instead of yours! I loved you more; but, you weren’t in the same world. In the Enchanted Forest, Father was the thing I loved most! But...It did take longer than I expected for me to break down. I really didn’t think I’d hold out for so long! But I did!
And..It was an accident! You were supposed to have Grace! I wanted the two of you to be a family! I still don’t know why it didn’t work! The plan was to let Grace keep her memories, well most of them. I was going to tweak them a bit. Everything until Wonderland would be normal. And then I’d give her fake ones, memories of time with you, a perfectly happy childhood! But..It’s the Dark Curse! I didn’t make it! Maybe Rumplestiltskin can explain what went wrong! I can’t! All I can do is guess! Maybe my magic wasn’t strong enough to do what I wanted. And since I fell short she got cursed like everyone else. Or maybe the Dark Curse had to make everyone suffer. I know I paid the price and I’m not just talking about my father! There was a hole left in my heart. Rumple warned me about that but only after I cast it! Maleficent tried to warn me before; but, I didn’t believe her. I didn’t want to believe her! I thought she was just being bitter. So, maybe you couldn’t have Grace because then you’d be happy; and, the Dark Curse doesn’t work that way. And once you were here...There was no magic in this land, Jefferson not before Rumple did whatever he did with bottled true love. I couldn’t undo anything, couldn’t fix anything! I just made you think I could! The only magic was in the things I brought over. It took me a long time to even realize I could use magic to get magic, years and years!I came to you for that last deal because I was desperate! I was terrified Emma would take Henry away from me! I couldn’t lose my son! But even then...I wasn’t sure it would work. I’d practiced some...I thought I could use the magic in a few things I had left to do a simple memory spell. But magic’s unpredictable here! I saw that when Henry ate the apple turnover! When you came to me about Grace, I was too focused on Henry. I was scared Jefferson! I was terrified that because of me he was going to die, that he’d never open his eyes again! I couldn’t think about anything else! And..Maybe I was being petty too! Maybe I didn’t want you to have your daughter when I couldn’t have my son! But that wasn’t all! I’d never tried to use a memory spell with things from my vault! It would be experimental! And you know how magic is tied to emotion! It would be a terrible idea to attempt something so sensitive when I was so upset! I could make Grace forget everything or maybe even make her some kind of vegetable, brain dead! And yes Jefferson! In my grief I said something stupid! But you should know you were never disposable! Why do you think I came to your wedding?! Why do you think I talked to you at Market at that day?! Why do you think I came to you 28 years ago and so many times since then?! I could never forget you! Never!”She was shaking like a leaf by the time Jefferson asked about Henry, tears pooling at her feet. “I don’t want to imagine that! I can’t! He’s my son, Jefferson!” Her tone was desperate. “But now..I might have to! Everyone thinks I’m some vicious murderer! No one will let me near Henry; and, Henry believes all of those lies! He doesn’t even want to see me!” Would he ever smile up at her ever again, compliment her cooking, hug her?! Would she never hold him in her arms again?! “He doesn’t know who I am, Jefferson! He looks at me and all he sees is the Evil Queen! I don’t have to imagine! I live it everyday!” Ever since he got that cursed book, that’s how he saw her. She’d never forget the way he’d glared at her, screaming she wasn’t his mom before running to his room. “I didn’t want your daughter to suffer Jefferson! That was never my intention! She was supposed to be reunited with you shortly! And I anonymously sent the neighbors money to make sure she was looked after while you were away! Id’ never let anything happen to your daughter! I know..I couldn’t comfort her, not when you were gone! I know she suffered! I know it’s my fault! And maybe I don’t deserve to be comforted! But I didn’t do this, Jefferson! I didn’t kill Archie! I’m not that type of person! Please! Please believe me!” Her words would fall on deaf ears. She already knew it. Why was she even bothering? But...She supposed her heart was stubborn. She still wanted to trust Jefferson, believe he could be the better person and comfort her in the way she’d never comforted him. She didn’t deserve it. She already knew that. He didn’t have to tell her. “Yes, Jefferson. I was wrong! It was warped; and, it was twisted! It was selfish and it was cruel! But I was trying to protect you! But I did it all wrong! I lost everything; and, I made the person I cared about the most suffer! But I did care! I do care! I can’t make you believe me; but, it’s the truth! Even now Jefferson...I care about you more than anyone! That’s why...That’s why it’s so important I know what you think!”

Jefferson jerked his head away from her caress. It was hardly surprising considering the circumstances; but, in her more fragile state, she’d be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the gesture stung somewhat. Once he’d yearned for her touch just as she’d longed for his. Or had that all been pretend, some game he’d played? Had he planned on betraying her from the beginning? Even now...She hated herself for how weak Jefferson made her feel. That she could let someone stir her heart like this...Stroking his cheek...It was supposed to be a power ploy, a gesture to assert her dominance and control. But it awakened feelings, emotions that should have been long since buried, hammered into the ground. But fortunately, in a state like this, her heart was comparable to a sieve. What she felt, what she touched, what she stirred, it didn’t linger. It slipped right through before she could process or make sense of any of it. All she knew was that she felt something she shouldn’t. Maybe it was best that he pulled back quickly. She wasn’t here to rekindle old flames. She was...Why was she here exactly? Yes, she was depressed, crushed even after Owen’s abrupt departure. But what exactly did she expect Jefferson to do about it? Surely after everything she’d put him through, he’d be indifferent to her suffering at best and derive joy from it at worst. Why was she here? “Call yourself what you like, Jefferson. But you will always be mine!” Her tone was firm and decisive and oddly enough, did not come off as possessive in spite of the words. And she, as difficult as it might be to accept, actually did believe those words. The two had shared so much from love to hate, from sweet ecstasy to bitter tears, from promises of a future and stability, a home to vile betrayals. After spending so much time together, divulging so much in moments of strength as well as weakness...Well bits and pieces rubbed off on one another. A part of Jefferson’s heart would always belong to her no matter who he slept with, no matter who he married. He would forever be her Jefferson. “Her name was Grace,” she said cruelly, a wicked smirk playing across her lips. “Here, it’s Paige.” Jefferson didn’t want to play nice? Well then she wouldn’t play nice. Two could be biting and tart. Her vulnerability meant nothing to him, clearly. So why should his desperation mean anything to her? He stepped back and paced; and, Regina let him. She didn’t physically have the power to step in anyways (not without magic). And why not let the caged little bird stretch his wings a bit? He couldn’t leave. Maybe now he’d have a taste of just what Regina had been forced to endure all those stifling years as Leopold’s wife. That hadn’t been the intent. But she wasn’t beyond appreciating such pleasures. Her eyes widened a bit in concern when Jefferson waved the gun at his head. But she quickly recovered herself. She couldn’t show weakness to him now, not when he was like this. Amber orbs took on a callously bored expression. Jefferson wouldn’t shoot! He couldn’t! He had Grace to worry about! This..This was all a trick, some show! “And why should I tell you anything?” she asked coldly. There was nothing to tell! The curse had already been cast. The only magic here was in the things she’d brought over. What was done could not be undone. Unless the curse was broken; and, Regina had no intentions of ever letting that happen, Paige would remain Paige forever. And sadly since things had gone horribly wrong for whatever reason, Jefferson couldn’t have her. She stiffed slightly when Jefferson resumed pacing, once more waving the gun around. It made her nervous! If it went off...Without her healing magic, she couldn’t save him! And with the gun aimed straight at his head like this...He would die in minutes! She’d watch him bleed to death on the floor and..NO! He wouldn’t do that! He hadn’t given up on being reunited with Grace! So long as he thought there was hope there, he’d never commit suicide! “You remember because I willed it. I didn’t want you to forget,” she said smoothly. “But you and I are the only ones who know.” And possibly Rumplestiltskin. He’d crafted the Dark Curse. It wouldn’t surprise her if he’d built in some safety measure to protect his memories. But she hadn’t confirmed that yet. He was acting like all the other Storybrooke citizens so far; but, no one could deceive like the Dark One. She’d have to be on her toes. She’d wanted Grace to remember too so that she could be a family with Jefferson to help make amends for Wonderland. She wasn’t sure where she’d gone wrong. Maybe the curse had to punish Jefferson, rip away what he held most dear. Maybe Regina’s magic wasn’t up to the task. Her control was not what Rumple’s was, as much as she was loath to admit it. Or maybe the issue was she’d tried to play too much with the girl’s head. As a gift to Jefferson, she’d attempted to make Grace forget the separation. She would remember everything up until Wonderland; and, then Regina would fill in the gaps with warm family memories between her and her father. Maybe that had been too much and being unable to handle that, she’d been given a cursed identity like the rest. Regina wouldn’t know. Magic theory wasn’t her strong suit. But what she did know was that she was not confessing vulnerability to Jefferson. Let him think her power was immutable, that everything was as she willed it.

Sometimes Regina really tired of it all, the attention, the theatrics. The theatrics were something she’d picked up both from Rumple and Jefferson to keep herself sane, to hide her true heart, her genuine intentions. If you gave people something else to fixate on, it wasn’t so simple to slip past the mask. But sometimes...It was a real strain. Now, she wanted to talk to Jefferson, try to understand his abysmal choice. An audience was unnecessary and unwanted. Regina didn’t wish to be scrutinized. But sadly as queen, she was easily recognized. People bowed and curtseyed; and, she just wanted to wave it all off. But of course she couldn’t. She was queen. This sort of thing was expected. She nodded politely yet curtly at the guests and the band. So long as no one thought to throw around the word evil, she was content to be civil. In spite of what others might think, she hadn’t come here to disrupt the festivities or cause harm. Honestly...She still wasn’t sure why she was here. Coming was seeming more and more like a dreadful idea all the time. Regina was grateful that while everyone else averted their gaze out of fear, Jefferson stared directly at her. He stood straight and tall, going so far as to even raise his chin. He was...a bit more stiff than she was used to seeing him. But at least he wasn’t fawning over her or cowering away from her. If he behaved like that...It would have crushed her. She didn’t know why exactly but...It would feel like the death of something important. Breaking glass...Something precious, lost forever. She was being silly and emotional. It wasn’t like her to lose her head like this. Where had her common sense gone?! At least she appeared as poised as ever, calm and in control. The mask of a regal queen was here to stay. He told her the honor would be all his; but, she could easily discern his sarcasm. Few others would recognize it. But the two of them had been close once upon a time. She still knew him better than most. And she was willing to bet she understood him better than that ditzy little air head who so desperately clung to him. Could Lyall read the sarcasm or was she entirely clueless? Well, Regina supposed it didn’t matter. This little exchange, this dance of words as well as footsteps was between the two of them. Third parties, particularly frivolous little leeches were unwelcome. Jefferson took her hand; and, she gracefully followed his lead, waltzing more than walking. She smiled slightly, a softer expression, not a smirk. Jefferson...He looked stunning in a tux and..It had been quite a while since she’d held him like this and...Focus! She didn’t care about him anymore! He was married; and, she was done with him! She was here to sate her idle curiosity! That was it! She nodded her head in agreement when Jefferson said they didn’t need an audience. Yes, she’d certainly prefer a bit of privacy. Her heart fluttered when Jefferson casually rested a hand across her waist; and, she wanted to scream. Damn her heart trying to betray her like this! She was done with him! He didn’t mean anything to her! Jefferson wasn’t even being intimate and still...No, it was nothing! “I was of course surprised not to receive an invitation. I’m certain it got lost in transit.” Her tone was one of forced cheer and levity. Was Jefferson able to so seamlessly cut Regina out of his life? Had she meant so little to him that he couldn’t even be troubled to send word of his marriage?! No...They weren’t together anymore. But...She had a right to know! After all his treachery, he should have told her personally! She shouldn’t have heard second hand like she had!
