He didn’t answer her question right away, instead giving Regina time to examine him. She was grateful she supposed. The transformation was rather startling; and, she could use a moment to collect herself. What...What in the world had happened to Jefferson?! There was time a where she’d kept track of him and his activities. She supposed even after Snow...She just couldn’t let him go. Some foolish, naive part of her heart hoped he’d realize his error and return to her, try and fix things. She supposed she was lucky he never had. Did she really want to endure more heartbreak at his hands? Hadn’t she suffered enough? Dealing with the treachery of the ‘failed’ experiment had been horribly painful. Somehow, she’d managed to move past that because she knew she truly loved Jefferson. And Jefferson had made a deal before he’d ever met her, before he understood the kind of person she was. How could she possibly penalize him for that? Yes, she’d been angry. She’d been hurt. She’d thrown him out of the castle and told him she never wanted to see his face again. Fortunately, he’d understood those words had been said in haste, in a fit of passion. He’d come back to explain himself and apologize. And she had to give him some credit. He’d told her the truth eventually. Yes...She wished it would have been sooner. But there was never a good moment to bring something like that up. Her nights had been lonely without him, her heart unsettled. How could she not give him a second chance? Their relationship might have originally been founded on deceit; but, his love for her was genuine. That’s why he could tell her the truth. That’s why he could believe in her. And she just hadn’t wished to live a life he wasn’t a part of. She’d welcomed him back and for a time been grateful, happy. But then he’d betrayed her again with Snow. She’d opened her heart to him again just to be brutally shut down, bled dry. He’d chosen Snow White over her, denying Regina her chance at closure! Daniel was dead while Snow was free to walk this Earth, go wherever she chose. But still...If she was being honest, Regina had wanted him to come back, to fix things. She’d always wanted to believe in him. But when he’d taken a wife, she’d understood it was over. There was no going back. And so...For the most part she’d try to ignore his existence, think of him as little as possible. That...Didn’t always go so well. But she kept away. And she only wanted to be informed if his life was in danger. That being the case, she’d heard nothing. There’d been no threats on his life as far as she knew. Still...He didn’t look...At all himself. Was he unwell? What had happened?! Why was he selling mushrooms?! More importantly...Why did she even care?! He gave a brief sarcastic smile at her comment. Good to see his snark was still working. Otherwise, she’d be really worried. But..she had tried to be tactful. Normally no one elicited such a response for her. But Jefferson had always been an exception. And he’d done her a kindness, calling her Regina like he always had. He hadn’t bowed or referred to her as queen, evil or otherwise. He was respecting her as Regina the person, the individual. Her titles still didn’t matter to him. And she was grateful. He’d even told her she looked well. So yes, she wanted to try and return the favor. But she wouldn’t lie to him. He looked different; and, she wasn’t sure how she felt about it. “What?!” she asked horrified when he said he’d hung up his hat. “Why?!” She couldn’t understand it. Jefferson was so magnificent! His work was a joy to watch and experience! He commanded powers none other did! He could travel to 17 different worlds! Why?! Why would he give that up?!

Jefferson returned her hug, casually wrapping his arms around her. She nestled up inside them, resting her head on his neck. She didn’t ever want him to go. She wished for this moment to last forever. But she was all too aware that far too quickly it would end. But now he was here with her. And she planned on savoring every last second. Regina beamed when Jefferson told her he’d wait until the end of time for her. “I’d do the same!” she assured him. “For you I’d wait forever!” And then some. She only wished she didn’t have to make him wait on her. But...She couldn’t deny the king his carnal pleasures. Jefferson knew this. She only hoped he understood. But he must! After all, he always came and waited just for her! He wasn’t a stupid man. He knew very well what kings and queens did in bed. She wished it wasn’t so. It felt awful, like a betrayal to her true love, to her heart. But she couldn’t say no even once. It would lead to unwanted questions never mind punishments. And if she was sloppy, she wouldn’t be the only one to suffer. If not Jefferson, the king would assume someone else had captured her heart. And he was far too envious and possessive to take an insult like that lying down. “They’re much more comfortable with you here!” she replied eagerly to the comment about her chambers. Really...Without him they were lonely, cold. They offered no solace, not the briefest trace of comfort. They only granted grim echoes of what the two had once shared. She’d stumble her way to bed after a particularly gruesome day and think how much warmer it had been with Jefferson there, curled up besides her. When he wasn’t there, the room just seemed cruel and empty, drudging up memories of what had once been and might never be again. Regina...was afraid for Jefferson because of his dangerous work and because he was sleeping with the queen. Whenever he left, she was terrified that she might never see him again. So each and every time before left she told him, “be safe”. Regina wouldn’t consider herself religious. Once upon a time...She thought she might believe in gods. But...She hadn’t been certain even then. But at her most vulnerable, after Daniel’s demise when she was waiting outside the tent with Jefferson, she prayed. Not out loud. Just in her head. It was...She was powerless. It was simply the only thing she could do. During that long stormy night when Viktor was finally ready to perform the surgery, she wanted to watch. But Jefferson just repeated Viktor’s orders. He insisted they needed to stay back since Viktor’s magic was different. They couldn't hope to understand it so they should just do what he said. Struggling for any glimpse of what was going on, not certain that she believed in any deity, she prayed, asking that if there was a god to please bring Daniel back to her. Daniel was one of the only good things in her life; and, she needed his stability. She feared that without him, without his kindness and support, she'd become a monster just like Mother. King Leopold didn’t care for her at all. Regina knew that even back then. And feelings of hatred were growing inside of her because of Snow, the little girl who stole absolutely everything from her intentional or otherwise. But she didn’t want to be filled with hate. She wanted to be kind and caring, loving. She knew she could be that person with Daniel. So she begged any gods that would listen to please, please, please return him to her. Her prayers weren’t answered. Viktor informed her that the operation had failed. The heart wasn’t strong enough. So she came to the conclusion that there are no gods or if they exist they weren't just. They didn’t care about her pain and suffering so she wouldn’t bother with them again, wouldn’t waste her time. If she wanted something, she’d grab it herself. But what she hadn’t truly appreciated at the time was that when the world came crashing down, Jefferson was there for her. She couldn’t hide the tears from him, couldn’t compose herself quickly enough. He’d held her, gently rubbed her back, been there for her, supported her. He hadn’t really said much. But it was enough just to know that someone cared, that someone was thinking of her. Jefferson had become her support, her source of stability. He could reinforce her kind heart, breathe life into it, make her believe in the good intentions of others, their sweetness. Without him...She’d truly be lost. So...perhaps the gods were real after all. Perhaps they’d left Jefferson to heal her heart and guide her. She had no idea. But she had no intention on relying on gods when everything about them was suspect. But still...Every time Jefferson left, she said “be safe” like a prayer. She knew the words alone wouldn’t do any good. They couldn’t offer an real protection. But...It was her prayer. More than anything, she wanted him to be safe, the light of her life, her heart, her soul. Everything good she had, he was the one who gave it to her. She could smile. She could hope and dream because he lived, because he visited, because he loved her! She wondered if she could ever express how very much he meant to her. Did he even have any idea how magnificent he was?! Well, she’d try to show him in any way she could! He was her love; and, more than anyone else, she wanted him to feel special, loved, cherished. She beamed again when he said she never need ask. And before she knew what was happening, he swept her up in his arms and carried her princess style to her bed, gently laying her down. She couldn’t stop grinning as he seated himself beside her. Although it seemed to take forever for him to get off his trench! She tried to be patient; but, it was hard! She wanted to cuddle! Finally he tossed his coat to the chair and kicked off his boots. Then he was there laying next to her, quickly moving an arm around her shoulders, holding her to him. She leaned into the touch, nestling her head into the nape of his neck. Her grin widened when Jefferson expressed her chambers were much more comfortable now. She felt the same. Here with him, she was happy. When he was near, she couldn’t not be happy. “I love you Jefferson,” she said softly, staring up into those gorgeous sapphire pools of his. “The best part of being queen is you. If I wasn’t queen, we’d never have met.”

Waiting always killed her, made her feel so very small and weak, powerless. She didn’t like it. For so much of her life she’d been helpless, forced to do as Mother or Leopold wished. In the end, all she could do was cling to her philosophies and ideas, try to keep her nature and heart the way she wished. Even speaking her mind was a power denied to her at moments. If Mother found her words disagreeable, she’d levitate Regina and choke her with her magic to make her take it back, promise to be good. And for Leopold, an honest opinion could very well mean the death of someone important to her. So she’d been forced to conceal her heart and act in secret. Waiting like this...It reminded her of such bitter times. She’d have to wait for Mother to sleep or be elsewhere so she could sneak in a moment or two with Daniel. She’d need to wait for Leopold to travel or sleep or give her permission to flee to the gardens before she could see Jefferson. Waiting...Waiting...Waiting...It was all she could do. There were no other options left to her. Now it was like that again. She’d come to Jefferson, seeking consolation, redemption, salvation. But there was no guarantee he’d give her any of that. She couldn’t force him and didn’t want to. It wouldn’t mean anything if she did. She just...longed for one person to believe in her if only in this limited respect. Archie’s death wasn’t her doing! Surely after everything, Jefferson understood her well enough to know that! They hadn’t become complete strangers had they?! He still knew her heart better than anyone else, didn’t he?! Even as she cried and shook, Jefferson didn’t change his expression for her. He just stood there, staring. Eventually one corner of his lip twitched into a slight smile but only for a split second. It was gone so quickly she couldn’t even be certain the expression had ever existed in the first place. She couldn’t see clearly with all the tears. And...even if he had birthed that slight smile...She couldn’t fathom the meaning. Was he happy to see her in such pain? No! That couldn’t be it, could it?! Jefferson wasn’t such a sadistic creature! They’d both changed a great deal since the first time they met but...just as Regina never wanted to see him suffer...Surely he couldn’t be pleased with her vulnerability, her fragility. He wasn’t such a man! He wasn’t! He spoke but his words brought no comfort, not like she’d been expecting any. Yes..She was delicate, weak, susceptible. Should he choose to do so, he could easily capitalize on her desperation. Jefferson leaned in closer still until there was no space between them and she could feel his warm breath on her cheek as he spoke. But the gesture wasn’t tender or sweet. There wasn’t the briefest trace of affection. This...This was a power ploy plain and simple. She was at his mercy being so frail, so unsteady and he knew it. His words were like a knife wrenched in the heart and cruelly twisted. “That’s what you do. And I’m not you.” But...They were so true she couldn’t deny them. Hadn’t she done just that to countless people, prey on their fear and desperation, their fervent wishes to get what she craved? But...She wasn’t always that way! And she didn’t want to be that person anymore! She was trying to redeem herself! But how could she do that when no one including her own son believed in her?! Was she a fool to think Jefferson would believe her in this? Was his heart so blackened with hatred so turned to stone that even he would assume the worst of her?! She wasn’t a monster! She’d made some terrible choices, done some awful things but...Evil wasn’t born! It was made! Couldn’t people sympathize with her?! Couldn’t she be forgiven?! No..He didn’t owe her an answer, didn’t owe her anything, not after everything she’d stolen from him. Yes...She’d had her reasons. But that didn’t make up for what she’d done. She’d never even properly apologized. But then...She wasn’t good at saying sorry. And apologies alone couldn’t fix anything. (She knew that all too well, from first hand experience.) She shuddered harder than ever, trying to think up some response. And the tears came even faster now. “I don’t know, Jefferson! I just don’t know! Isn’t it enough to know I do care?! I shouldn’t! I know that! I’ve tried so hard to not care to get you out of my head but...It doesn’t work! It never worked! Not once! When I cast the curse and it left a hole in my heart...You were the only one who could make me feel anything! It was always you!”

Jefferson was a perceptive sort to begin with. And given Regina’s and his...history however complicated, he understood her better than most. No, no one knew her heart better than him. That was the one thing that never changed no matter how much the two of them longed to strangle the other. (And yes, they’d certainly both had their moments! Jefferson had in fact aimed a gun at her even as he’d been unable to pull the trigger.) So Regina could tell that Jefferson knew something was...Well...She wouldn’t use the word wrong but...Oh she didn’t know! Everything was complicated! She was happy of course. But...She was terrified of how he’d feel! And if this was something he didn’t want...But...She knew there was no way she could get rid of the child. It was theirs! And she was having it! But naturally he’d know something was on her mind. Normally, she’d say she’d like to see him. Or she’d pop up at his house unexpected. He always let her in now. Although even before he’d never actually turned her away. But...that was likely in part because she could simply let herself in with the skeleton keys. Now, he was happy to see her. The thought did bring a smile to her lips even in her stressed state. Jefferson grinned at her offer of tea and she mirrored the expression. Regina felt a smile suited Jefferson better than anyone else. Sometimes..It was enough to send shivers down her spine. Not quite now though...She was...preoccupied. Regina chuckled at his response. It was just...so Jefferson to say something like that. It helped ease her mind a trifle. She rolled her eyes when he clarified what the expression meant. But it was a gentle, tender eye roll, one that clearly expressed he need not have elaborated for her. She understood. Regina couldn’t recall him ever turning down tea. No matter the hour or the circumstances, if she offered a cup, he’d eagerly accept. His enthusiasm for the beverage had certainly lead to some interesting excursions on her part. She’d sneak into the kitchen in the dead of night to prepare some just for him! She’d been caught once or twice...Whether she was reprimanded would depend on just who saw her. A few servants pitied her for her loneliness and the way the king treated her. Bruce and Maria never breathed a word of her odd night activities. But other servants...They were all too happy to tell Leopold just what his queen was up to. And he was all too quick to remind her how inappropriate tea brewing was for someone in her position. And the scolding didn’t end with words and cold glares. But now she was free of Leopold’s stifling grasp. She no longer had to sneak around to prepare tea. Brewing it openly was something that brought her great joy. Some might find it strange. But it had been a luxury denied to her for such a long while. Regina sucked in her breath at Jefferson’s question, not quite sure how to answer. Would it be better to get the news over with now, see the initial reaction immediately or wait until she didn’t have the tea to worry about? After a moment of silence she decided it would be best to wait for tea. Then there wouldn’t be any interruptions. “Give me a moment and I’ll explain,” she promised. Before waiting for any sort of answer, she bustled into the kitchen to finish her work. She returned a few moments later with the tea kettle and two cups. She set the tray of goodies down and fixed tea just the way Jefferson liked it. She cradled her cup in her hands and took a seat. Regina took a deep breath. There...Wasn’t any easy way to say this...Bluntness was probably her friend here. She stared straight into those blue eyes she loved so dearly. “Jefferson, I’m pregnant.” Her tone didn’t waver. Her voice was surprisingly calm and yet had a fierce undercurrent of intensity. This was not an apathetic statement. Jefferson would easily tell this was extremely important to her. Her will alone kept her anxiety and nerves in check. She had no intention of sobbing or laughing like a maniac when she shared such significant news.

His amused smile never failed to brighten her day. But then his mere presence did that. She adored every one of his facial expressions. Well...She supposed that wasn’t fair. She’d seen a range of smiles. But to her, it seemed he did little more than smile when he was with her. He was either smiling or being theatrical or both. He really was a breath of fresh air in this stagnating, smothering palace. When he was near, the whole world seemed to glisten and glimmer. Everything was bathed in a golden glow, crisp and new. Not literally of course. Technically speaking, the garden looked the same as it always did. It was her perspective that shifted. With him here, she saw everything through...How did that expression go? Rose colored glasses? Jefferson really was the sweetest person she knew! He detested Wonderland but was willing to visit for her sake! “I’ve never been there,” she confessed. “But you’re not the only one who doesn’t like it. Rumple said it was one annoying little world.” That’s what he’d told her when he’d given Regina the portal, the one she’d pushed Mother through to free herself, give her a new life. Why...Why had she even bothered? She married Leopold anyways and was now as trapped as ever. “But I don’t think it’s a good idea to go there. You see..Mother...” She nervously bit her lip, trying to figure out how to best explain it. She wasn’t sure why exactly she felt the need to tell him. But somehow...This wasn’t something she wanted to keep secret from him. “I didn’t want to do it! I really didn’t! But...Mother...Well...I...In the vaults I told you before she was a monster and...I just..I couldn’t live with her anymore and Rumplestiltskin...he gave me this mirror to help....Really, if there was another way...But..You don’t understand! She had barrier spells! She wouldn’t let me leave even after she...” Regina shook at the memory, Mother standing over Daniel, heart clenched in her fist, pounding it into dust. Regina took a deep breath and quickly moved her fingers to her eyes to brush away the tears that were brimming, threatening to spill over. Jefferson was here! Now wasn’t the time for sorrow! “In any case, I sent her to Wonderland. I...If she found me..I don’t know what she do but...” She shivered. “When..When she thought I’d spoken out of turn or when I did something she didn’t approve of...She’d hurt me with her magic to try and force me to obey her. So if she saw me again after this......” She didn’t think there was a need to finish. He should understand things would end poorly, very poorly! Regina beamed when Jefferson told her they’d go to Neverland, quickly pushing all thoughts of Mother straight out of her head. She wouldn’t dwell there today! She was going to enjoy herself with Jefferson! No one made her feel the way he did! Jefferson started to take his hat off but then paused to offer a warning. “Pan?” she asked curiously. The name didn’t sound familiar. He told her to stay close and Regina immediately moved closer, timidly extending an arm for him to take, hoping she wasn’t being too forward. Her whole face lit up when he tossed the hat and it began to spin, exuding purple smoke. And when Jefferson grabbed her hand, she squeezed it, grin widening. Nothing comforted her so much as his touch! She loved being close to him like this! “Ready!” she cheered, laughing at the wonder that was his hat and his magic and the adventure that was soon to follow.

Jefferson didn’t look at her right away, instead choosing to fix his gaze on his mushrooms. But she could tell he recognized her voice by the way he stiffened. This eye contact avoidance was deliberate. But eventually he raised his eyes and rested them on her face. She still wasn’t perfectly composed by this point. She was...stunned to say the least. She’d never seen Jefferson so...humbled. He’d traded in his suit for planer clothes, much less fancy and noticeable. They were missing his typical flare. And she couldn’t spy his special hat anywhere. The hat never used to leave his side. Where he went it went. If it wasn’t on his head he’d be fiddling with it. At the very least it would rest beside him on the ground. But...She would notice if it were here. There was no space to hide anything in his tiny cart. He’d taken less time with his hair too. She would never presume to guess what he’d done with it in the past. But it was always neat and presentable. Now...She wouldn’t say it looked bad. It didn’t. But it was certainly...different. Messy in a tamed fashion if that made any sense. It didn’t look at as though he’d just jumped out of bed; but, she doubted his comb had seen all that much use. As startled as she appeared, she did smile a bit at the use of her name. It was nice to know that some things never changed. At least he was still willing to call her that. Did that mean he still saw her as Regina not just some queen and certainly not an evil one?! And...Why should she care?! She was done with him! He’d betrayed her, left her, never contacted her again, and then got married and even had a kid! He meant nothing to her! Regina just rolled her eyes at his direct answer. “I can see that. I meant why are you selling mushrooms,” she elaborated. When Jefferson told her she looked well, her heart did this odd fluttering thing. Well, she must have eaten something disagreeable for lunch. Hopefully she wouldn’t get sick later. She couldn’t afford that now not when Snow was so near. His words did please her though, as much as they shouldn’t. Her smile brightened to something reminiscent of the smile the young naive queen used to wear for a certain portal jumper. Regina would like to say he looked well too; but, she was still adjusting to this shift in appearance. “You look different,” she said honestly. Her tone wasn’t cruel or biting. It wasn’t awkward or uncomfortable either. It wasn’t indifferent. It had more emotion than one simply stating a fact. Her voice clearly expressed that it was neither a compliment nor an insult. She wasn’t saying he looked bad; but, neither was she saying he looked extraordinary. He just...He was different; and, she wasn’t sure how she felt about it.

Why...Why in the world had Regina decided to come here? But...She might not have Jefferson’s impressive information network; but, as the queen she still heard things. And she paid extra special attention to Jefferson to begin with. And so a little bird had told her a certain portal jumper was about to be wed. Originally she hadn’t believed it. Jefferson, her Jefferson getting married to someone besides her?! She couldn’t accept it! Yes...Things had...Alright they’d ended poorly. But it was Jefferson’s fault! He was the one who broke it, choosing Snow over her! Regina could have finally had her happy ending, been at peace knowing justice was served. Finally, she could have punished Snow for all she stole, all her lies and deception! But no...Jefferson had freed the little demon! And then...He’d never tried to contact her again! Damn him! Why should she even care who he married or what he did?! He’d made his choice! And still...Here she was. She hadn’t approached Jefferson beforehand. She’d merely stayed in the background to bare witness. She couldn’t say she thought much of this Lyall or Ly as Jefferson called her. She seemed like a ditzy little air head to Regina. Regina would be very much surprised if the girl had an original thought in her head. And the way she clung to Jefferson...It was enough to make Regina sick to her stomach! Talk about needy! Jefferson was going to have issues with this one! But it wasn’t her problem! She’d only come to see if it was true she supposed. Maybe..No, she wasn’t even going to think like that! Some time had passed with him gone. And Regina was perfectly fine without him! She hadn’t come just to see if he’d actually go through with it! No part of her had hoped that maybe at the last minute he’d change his mind, that something or rather...someone would convince him to break things off! She’d only come out of idle curiosity! Why was she so irritated?! Jefferson’s chapter in her life was over! Their story had ended! He could do whatever pleased him even if he made the worst choices! And Lyall...She was certainly a bad one! But far be it from Regina to warn Jefferson! She didn’t owe him anything not after two betrayals! She’d forgiven the first one, the way he’d lied to her. Their whole relationship had been built off his deceit! But he’d made the deal before he’d ever met her, before he knew who she was and what she wanted. So as angry as she’d been, she had managed to let it go and forgive him, trust him even. What an idiot she’d been! Because then what had he gone and done but betrayed her trust again?! Really love was weakness! It only lead to heartbreak. Hadn’t Jefferson learned that lesson yet?! Would Lyall be his cruel teacher?! Or would he be the one to shatter her dreams? It didn’t matter! It had absolutely nothing to do with Regina! NOTHING!Really...She should just head back to her castle now! But...something kept her rooted here. And when Lyall finally disconnected herself from Jefferson to dance with someone else, Regina didn’t miss a beat. Without a thought she approached Jefferson and extended a hand for him to take. “Will you do me the honor of this dance my dear Jefferson?” she asked with a wicked smirk, one that belied her sweet tone.

Regina was both terrified and excited. She had no idea how Jefferson would take this...most recent development. No doubt he was curious as to why she’d called him up all of a sudden. No, it was hardly the first time she’d sent him a line. The two of them...as amazing as it was to consider had agreed to try it again, to be together, to build a proper relationship. She’d been trying to deny her heart for so many years. But now...It was long past time to face facts. Regina...she loved him, cherished Jefferson above all others. At her worst, at her weakest, she always ran to him. He was the one she wanted to comfort her and soothe her fears and insecurities which yes she did have! Most just would never guess it since she was a master at masking her emotions. But...That was part of the reason she loved Jefferson so much. At his heart, Jefferson truly understood her. She couldn’t fool him, couldn’t lie to him. He was always the one to see past her mask. No, he wasn’t always kind and gentle. But then neither way she. Sometimes...Both of them could use a push! But then...sometimes they were out of line...Yes, they had issues that needed to be worked on. But they were getting there little by little. They important thing was they made each other happy. But how would Jefferson feel about this?! Would this make him happy or upset?! She didn’t know! And her ignorance coupled with her tendency of imagining the worst case scenario given cruel experience, was eating her alive! She’d lost track of just how many times she’d circled the living room with her frantic pacing, eyes always aimed at the window. She would know the second he arrived! She saw his car pull up and she was at the door by the time he rung the bell. She threw it open less than a second after he’d pressed the button. Regina knew she probably looked frazzled but well...This was...It was certainly news! But even being a nervous wreck like she was, Jefferson’s presence still managed to calm her. She smiled softly up at him, taking a moment to collect herself. “Please come in. Would you like some tea? I started brewing it a little while ago. It should be done soon.” She’d needed something to do with her fingers. Not like busy fingers had managed to distract her much. At least it gave her something to do, something reassuring and familiar. Jefferson had always loved tea for as long as Regina had known him. So she’d practiced as a queen for him. Of course she had to do so in secret. It wasn’t respectable for a queen to brew tea herself! That was servant work. But she’d been determined to make some especially for Jefferson.

“That’s right! No arguing with a queen!” she teased him. She could playfully throw her title around with Jefferson because he didn’t take it seriously. He saw her for the woman she was not the man she married. He didn’t care about her riches or her influence (which was pretty much non-existent at this point in time since Leopold didn’t want her to get involved with anything), but her thoughts and opinions, her heart. It was liberating, using the word queen not to try and force involvement in politics that she should be a part of to begin with but just to...have fun! In the palace, fun was a pipe dream. Regina could only enjoy herself, be herself when Jefferson paid her a visit. She was so lucky! They’d only met by chance! If he hadn’t come in at just the right moment, how bleak her life would have been! She had to wonder...Would she have ended things already if it hadn’t been for him? But...Such grim thoughts didn’t suit her not when Jefferson was near! Her happiness now might need to sustain her for months! So no gloomy thoughts allowed! Only smiles and laughter! “Wherever my heart desires?” she echoed eagerly. He was too sweet! She wasn’t even allowed to pick what food they had for supper! Even her dresses were selected by someone else, attendants Leopold had hand picked himself. (He had very particular tastes.) But here...Jefferson was giving her a choice, saying they could go wherever she wanted! Worlds?! She’d witnessed it herself; but, it was still hard to believe his hat could take him to different worlds, 17 to be exact! She knew because each door lead to a new place. And she’d breathlessly counted them herself, eyes filled with wonder. Seventeen worlds! And here he was saying she could choose any one, any one at all! Regina chuckled at the mention of Wonderland. “But you hate it!” He’d mentioned it before; and, when Jefferson spoke Regina listened and remembered. She’d love nothing more than to listen to him all day. He had the best stories to tell! And his voice...She just wanted to nestle up inside it. “Don’t worry! I don’t want to go to Wonderland!” Maybe one day she’d see it for herself. But now...She’d rather not. Regina had trapped Mother there after all. She..She couldn’t kill her or even hurt her just to free herself. The best thing she could do was send her away. And she really didn’t want to run into her again! That meeting would be...far less than pleasant. “Well..I stumbled across something in one of the books in the library. There’s apparently this world called Neverland! I hear it’s wonderful! There’s a beautiful beach and you can make all your wishes come true just by imagining things!” Oh she must sound like such a silly little girl gushing like this, eyes glistening with anticipation! But..It sounded so magnificent! “Can your hat take us there?!”

The room was depressingly silent as she fumbled with the candle. Her fingers were shaking too much. It took three matches to get it lit. She supposed with the way things were going, she was lucky she hadn’t set her fingers ablaze. Rumple was teaching her magic; but, she was no where close to his level yet. She could levitate small objects yes and teleport herself and a couple other people under duress. She had managed to get all three of them out of Mother’s vault intact when things went awry! She was so grateful for that! The thought of losing Jefferson before she even really knew him..It killed her. Really...Jefferson was the only good thing in her small, cluttered world. But she wasn’t even sure she could repeat that feat under calmer circumstances. Now she’d more or less mastered self teleportation. Although...Sometimes it was still a bit finicky. Sometimes...She’d end up somewhere unexpected. She wouldn’t get far enough or would go too far. And sometimes...She’d have to concentrate for an extra minute or so when it didn’t quite work the first time...But she was getting there! Slowly but surely she was getting there. Rumple had high hopes for her! And unlike Mother, he actually did praise her when he felt she’d done well. His criticism was helpful, constructive not just nasty and disagreeable like Mother’s had been. And unlike Mother...He gave her choices. Yes, he told her quite clearly when something couldn’t be done. “Dead is dead.” He’d been adamant about that. But then he’d been right. Jefferson had told her that if Viktor couldn’t do what she wanted, no one could. And..It hadn’t worked out with him. He’d been the first one besides Daniel to consider her feelings, to ask what she wanted. She’d never forget his first words to her after telling her she wasn’t saying his name right. (Well Rumplestiltskin was a complicated name! She was much happier just calling him Rumple!) “What do you want?” Father...Even Father had never asked that. She was used to having everything scheduled, everything planned. Regina could maybe pull away an hour between tea and lessons but...That was about it. And Father just wanted Regina to go along with whatever scheme Mother had because it would be easier for him. One word from Mother and he’d keep quiet even as she...There was no denying it was there? Mother...Hadn’t mother magically abused her? Regina hadn’t been content to be Mother’s doll or plaything. She had her own thoughts and opinions and expressed them. And such views were unfavorable in Mother's eyes. She displayed her skill frequently, wishing to reform Regina into an “obedient” daughter. But Regina wasn’t weak willed the way her father was. She’d need to compromise her wishes at times so Mother would stop strangling her; but, she never lost sight of her sense of self. She knew what she wanted. And what she wanted was very different from what her mother wanted. But yes...She remembered all those times Mother had levitated her to rip the air from her lungs...Apparently choking her on the ground wasn’t flashy or off putting enough. No..Mother wasn’t one for subtlety. Now...The comparisons between her old and new life were frightening to think about. Both Mother and Leopold were overbearing. Both wanted a pretty little doll to parrot their ideas, their wishes. And neither one of them would accept her heart’s choice. Regina had to sneak around with Daniel because she knew Mother might very well kill him if she found out. And here with Jefferson...Weren't they in the same situation? Was Regina a horribly selfish person putting Jefferson in danger like this?! If Leopold found out she loved someone else and that someone was Jefferson...Wouldn’t he kill him too?! No! She couldn’t take that! She couldn’t handle losing another love! Not because of her! The only thing Daniel had done wrong was pick Regina, love her. Because he’d cared, because he’d listened to her like she was a person and considered her thoughts and feelings because he’d smiled so sweetly and kissed her and she’d kissed him back...Because Regina loved and cherished and chose him...His heart was ripped out and crushed! What if...What if a similar fate waited Jefferson?! How long could they keep this a secret?! What if King Leopold discovered the truth?! Would Jefferson be put to the torch or would his head wind up on a chopping block?! What?! NO! She couldn’t take that! She wouldn’t! Regina was trembling slightly thanks to the horrible imagery when Jefferson made his presence known with the sweet and playful, “Ask”. Her eyes swiveled around to drink him in, bathe in the wonder and glory that was her beloved, her Jefferson. He rose, holding out his arms to her before bowing theatrically as he was apt to do. Her lips couldn’t help but curl into a smile at that. This was her Jefferson, same as ever. He was safe. He was whole. Nothing..Nothing was ever going to hurt him! She wouldn’t let it! It wouldn’t be like it was with Daniel! She didn’t care what she had to do to protect him! She would give up her life to save his! She wouldn’t even think about it! If Leopold tried anything, she’d stand against him with whatever limited magic she’d mastered! He wasn’t touching Jefferson! He was hers and hers alone! Regina wondered if Jefferson knew how shaky she was. He didn’t make her come to him but instead he came to her, leaning down to rest his lips against her forehead, touch cool and soothing. She wrapped her arms around him, sighing softly. How comforting his presence was. He alone could make the nightmares disappear. For a moment, he could still her quivering soul. With him, she felt safe, wanted, loved. He was her world. She loved nothing so much as his visits and loathed nothing so much as watching him leave. “You’re here now!” she assured him, smiling warmly. “That’s more than enough!” He was the dream in a world that had been nothing but a hellish nightmare. Her dreams about him sustained her throughout the day, during their time apart which could be quite long depending upon his work. Sometimes he was gone for months. But her heart wouldn’t shatter because she’d picture his face, his tender smile, the way his fingers rubbed her back, the feel of his lips pressed up against her own, the scent just..everything...So long as she could remember him, she’d weather any storm. She’d always wait for him. She dreamed of running away, escaping with him, starting up a family and bearing his children. But sadly...These were just fantasies. Leopold was a jealous man. And he was extremely possessive of anything he felt he had a claim to. If Regina should run...He’d tear apart the kingdom looking for her. And to save face, he’d say his queen was abducted. People could be charged with kidnapping or potentially murder if she wasn’t found! How many would die?! Her conscience certainly couldn’t bare the weight of such a burden. And if she was found with Jefferson...He’d be put to death for sure! It was a pipe dream and nothing more. Only death would free her, either Leopold’s or her own. Regina threw her arms around Jefferson again, squeezing him tightly. “Thank you so much for waiting! I’m really sorry! I hope you weren’t waiting too long!” She’d been gone for a while...She had no idea when he’d even gotten here. “Lay down with me?” she asked innocently, still clinging to Jefferson. She wanted to curl up with him and forget all about Leopold and her awful night. When Jefferson held her close and they cuddled...It was like the world disappeared. There was just the two of them. No jealous king. No work. No worries. Just Jefferson and Regina, two people hopelessly in love.

Jefferson just stared at her with empty eyes. Honestly...She didn’t even know if Jefferson had heard of the Dark Curse. She still hadn’t been ready and willing to cast it when she’d left him in Wonderland. She’d feared the day she’d break down and use that spell was close at hand; but, several years had passed before she’d been pushed past her limit, before she had to resort to that. There hadn’t been that many rumors about it until right before she’d cast it. But it wouldn’t be surprising if Jefferson recognized the name. He’d worked for Rumple for a long time after all. And Rumple was the one who crafted it. And besides that...When they’d first met all those years ago at her question as to what he knew about it he’d said, “I hear things. Jefferson's the name, and I'm a man who travels and sees much.” Information was his bread and butter as much as magical artifacts. So he might have heard something or other about it. Honestly...She had no idea how Jefferson would handle her coy question. It wasn’t what she wanted to say. It wasn’t why she was here. But the words had burst from her lips unbidden. By now...She was just so used to the facade, pretending to be this unphazeable, cold, unyielding queen. Nothing stirred her heart. She cared for no one’s happiness but her own. Others wished to believe it and so she played the part to perfection. Jefferson was silent for a while and Regina’s alluring amber orbs never strayed from his face. They bored straight through him, never once betraying her fragile state, all the despair and confused feelings swirling around inside her. They said eyes were the windows to the soul and it was true. But thanks to years of practice, Regina knew how to steel them, lock the emotions away so only she would know, only she would feel them. No, even at a weaker moment, the voice was what cried out against her. But only once, for that pitiful word. Now it was under control. Her words had been biting and nearly cruel; but, at least they hadn’t been choked up, unsteady like before. Eventually Jefferson laughed; but, the sound contained no mirth, no traces of warmth. It was maniacal and very disturbing. Just...What exactly had happened to him in Wonderland so that he could make such a sound? Regina feared what Mother had put him through. But her mask was slipped firmly in place. She was the epitome of calm and composed, collected and cool. Her anxiety was well hidden, nowhere Jefferson could get at it. Not yet at least. Regina certainly didn’t like being labeled crazy. Although...maybe crazy was preferable to evil queen. She wasn’t sure. She’d have to think on it. But she was more...concerned about Jefferson at the moment. He was a good deal less stable than she’d thought. She had been...avoiding paying any sort of attention to him given Wonderland. She just...She didn’t quite know what to do about it. And him standing before her like this...Now she was really at a loss. Her concern was enough to briefly drive away the grief of losing Owen. Now, Jefferson was at the center of her thoughts, completely commanding her attention. Talk about being unhinged! All of a sudden he pulled out a gun! A gun! And he was aiming it straight at her! Now she was nervous, scared even. She hadn’t realized he’d even had one. Was it loaded?! If it was...Should he pull the trigger...There was no magic here. If he pointed and pulled...So long as his aim wasn’t abysmal...She’d die..Just like that, all her dreams and ambitions snuffed out in an instant. Her mask never faltered. Even as her heart raced and her thoughts went wild, imagining one thousand unpleasant scenes in a split second, all involving a loud boom and a gruesome death, blood spilled over his beautiful carpet, still she appeared placid, tranquil even. At his command to uncast it, she laughed, the sound light and airy, amused. So, he didn’t understand that magic didn’t work here then. She couldn’t ‘uncast it’ even if she wanted to. There was a reset button of sorts; but, it wouldn’t do what he wished. It wouldn’t take them back just destroy everything. “Come now. Put the gun down, my dear Jefferson,” she said smoothly, walking straight towards him, seemingly without fear. She possessively caressed his cheek in a condescending fashion. “Put it down my love. We both know you won’t shoot. If you do...What would happen to your poor Paige? She’ll never go back to being Grace. You kill me and you murder the only family you have left. You’ll never get back your loving daughter.”

Regina simply stood there, waiting for Jefferson’s answer, to hear what he thought, what he believed. Would he even tell her? Or this time would he be the one to end things? Would he insist he didn’t need her anymore? Regina supposed...Neither her or Jefferson were forgiving people. No matter how upset she’d been in the hospital, how frantic, she doubted Jefferson would ever let go of that spiteful, bitter remark she’d so careless spat out in a fit of rage and indignance. She just didn’t understand how he could have the nerve to bother her then when she was losing everything, the only person left who cared anything for her! Couldn’t he have given her space, a moment to grieve and cry? If he’d just come to her a little later...She would have helped! She would have kept her end of the bargain! Being labeled as the Evil Queen, she was often misunderstood. But she took no pleasure in breaking deals. Rather, it was something to be avoided whenever possible. Yes, Regina put her interests first. If it came between her and someone else (if it wasn’t someone she loved) she’d pick her every time. So no, she wouldn’t lose too much sleep if for whatever reason she couldn’t follow through with her nectarous promises. But she did try her hardest to offer what was agreed upon. It had less to do with being a good person and more a matter of practicality. Those who betrayed others without a second thought were quick to find themselves knee deep in treachery. Why should someone trust you and assist you if your word meant nothing? But for one who kept their deals, they built a good reputation for themselves, fostered trust. And so they could use various parties again for other things. Yes, Regina had turned into a deceptive creature, using guile and manipulation to get what she wanted, what she felt she was entitled to. But a hidden agenda did not necessarily completely nullify the open one. Regina had never wanted to be hated. Far from it. She’d longed to be loved. It killed her when she first heard the title “Evil Queen”. She’d been forced to embrace it to distance herself from people, to put up walls around her heart so the cruel words could no longer sting. Even as she accepted the name as unfair as she found it, there was always that tiny part, the piece of her heart she couldn’t quite smother and strangle herself that did wish for love and affection, acceptance. So often times..She didn’t just pretend to like someone. If she seemed nice, she often did actually want to be liked back. Of course...That wasn’t always the case. Some people really were just pawns to be played with, tools to fulfill her schemes. She’d twist minds, bend wills to hers through sweet words of manipulation. You could typically build better allies if you offered someone their heart’s desire and had them charge ahead willingly, hoping to receive the honeyed fruit you promised. Regina’s promises were usually sincere. Keeping one's word ensured loyalty. You never knew when you could use someone’s help again. Good for business. But she wouldn’t cry herself to sleep if for some reason or other she couldn’t follow through on her end of the bargain. Tears were weakness. And yet...Here they were..tears trickling down her cheek. She furiously dabbed at her eyes, willing them to stop. Here...Jefferson was forever the exception. She had cried herself to sleep after breaking both deals with him. It didn’t matter that one was for his protection and the other was destroyed because she was simply in no state to fulfill it or think about anything besides Henry. Jefferson...He was forever the one person she didn’t wish hurt however much she tried to deny that even to herself. Now...At her limit, at her weakest, depression threatening to swallow her whole, she couldn’t rationalize her feelings away. She still...felt something for Jefferson. That was why at her worst, at her most vulnerable, she always came to him like now even as she didn’t know what she was looking for. He was the answer. He was always the answer to the question she didn’t even know how to formulate. Yes...She’d come to him for many things over the years. But he was wrong! She’d come to him for redemption! No...She hadn’t phrased it like that but...When she waited for him as Leopold’s miserable wife...He was her redemption. Because of him, she could cling to her kind heart a little longer. She could believe in Snow’s goodness. She regretted her bitter feelings towards the girl, understanding to some extent that Mother was the monster who had used and manipulated Snow. Deep down, she knew it had been an accident, that Snow had been deceived. With Jefferson..He gave her so much. Being with him, it was like being forgiven for her dark thoughts, her crumpled heart. He breathed new life into it, helped her see all the sweet, wonderful things multiple worlds had to offer. But there was no point in correcting him. She doubted he’d believe it and...It just hurt too much to think of, all the things that had gone wrong. How...How had they even gotten to this point? Once he was hers and she his and no matter how awful the world seemed, his smile was enough. He could make her happy. And she could make him smile and laugh. Now...She didn’t even know what they were doing to each other, what they felt. But surely...It was sick and twisted, just like her tarnished soul. Regina might be quick to dismiss others’ needs in general but not Jefferson’s. His were important. She’d given him a mansion, everything he could want. She’d tried to give him Grace! She’d..failed there likely given the nature of the curse. But it wasn’t for lack of trying! It wasn’t something that was simple to fix after the curse was cast and there was no magic in this land! It had taken her years and years to even realize she could convert magic into other magic. Not like she would admit such weakness to Jefferson even now. Today..It wasn’t the time for that story. She had to leave quickly. If someone caught Regina with Jefferson...Who knew what they would do to him! They’d probably assume he was collaborating with her, protecting a vicious murderer! His question was rhetorical; but, she couldn’t help but wince at the blatant display of acidity, tartness. She knew where this was going and...She didn’t like it! But...She’d come to him and he had every right to say his peace. All she could do was listen and try to be grateful that he hadn’t kicked her out yet. The gratitude ran thin at the word Henry. She didn’t want to think about her son now! He didn’t believe in her! He honestly thought she was this irredeemable evil queen figure, a heartless murderer, a monster! Regina shook slightly when he laughed and said it must be a dreadful thing. The sound had hardly been jovial but it hit a nerve. Yes...Dreadful didn’t begin to cover it. But did he stop?! Oh no! He kept on going. By the time he got to the word liar, tears were freely flowing down her cheek again. Her vision was blurred...But she could see well enough to know he was circling her. She didn’t move. Why should she? She just...She didn’t even know what to do. Eventually he stopped and moved in closer, the way he used to, completely denying any personal space bubble. But here...It wasn’t a comforting gesture. She didn’t know what it was. She felt like a broken record today. Didn’t know. Didn’t know. Didn’t know. Her slight shaking grew into a violent tremble when he commented on what a horrible thing it was for a parent to endure. His final question...She just didn’t even know what to say...Why did she care what he believed? Why was it so important? Why did she care so much? But she couldn’t keep silent. He’d asked but... She swallowed hard, coaxing her tongue to work. “I asked you first!” Her tone was defiant and fierce even as she stood there shuddering, tears pouring from her eyes, shattered vessels leaking broken dreams. “Jefferson...Do you believe me?” This time her voice was so soft that Jefferson wouldn’t have been able to hear it had he not been nearly pressed up against her.

Regina released a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding when the door creaked open. So..At least Jefferson was willing to see her for a split second. Of course...That didn’t mean much. He might not have realized it was her until just now. Although it was at least slightly comforting that he hadn’t immediately slammed the door in her face upon recognition. He stood there, face expressionless. That was more than she could say for herself. Her eyes were still red from all the crying she’d done. Why?! Why had she sat through that in her car?! Did she want to torture herself?! But...She supposed some small part of her had hoped, had clung to the idea that Henry wouldn’t believe Emma, that he’d actually trust in her, his mother! But the way his face had instantly crumpled...She knew that wasn’t the case. Those tears..He’d swallowed every word. Now...He thought Regina was a monster. He didn’t believe for a second that she was redeemable, that she could change. Jefferson...Jefferson wouldn’t feel that way, would he?! He might think she was some monster after everything; but, surely...He knew her well enough to understand that she’d never kill Archie at least not over something so petty and not so obviously! Really...She manipulated the genie into murdering her loathsome husband with none any the wiser! She wouldn’t be so careless! The fight..the witness..the missing files...How could they honestly think she’d be so stupid?! Yes...She had a reputation for being cruel and malicious during her reign. (Although she still didn’t feel her Evil Queen title was deserved.) But she was also known for being devious which meant she was clever and resourceful! What part of this screamed competent?! Imbecile absolutely but crafty...This didn’t sound anything like her! Jefferson would get that, wouldn’t he?! And...He’d think she could change wouldn’t he?! He’d known her when she was kinder, more gentle. He’d seen her change! But if she could change once, couldn’t she change twice?! No, she could never go back to being that naive little noble, so confused she didn’t have the first idea as to how a queen could obtain a royal passport. And no she didn’t want to go back to being that helpless, that lost! (She hadn’t been stupid, though. She’d just known so little about politics and the outside world. There was a difference!) But...Her sympathetic heart...Surely that was something she could reclaim, wasn’t it?! Jefferson didn’t say a word. But Regina wasn’t about to be the first one to speak. She didn’t think she could coax her tongue into working now even if she wanted to. And...She had not a clue of what to say, how to begin this. And there was that snark she remembered so well. Yes, she’d loved him for his snide, creative jibes. But now..It stung. Yes...She’d understood what he was getting at. Before in the hospital she'd told him she was done with him. But..That wasn’t fair! Her little boy had been in a coma! She’d thought he was dying! She didn’t know if he’d ever open his eyes again! Magic was..finicky in Storybrooke at the time. This was after all the Land Without Magic. The only magic was in the things she brought over before Rumple had...been Rumple and done whatever the hell he’d done to restore magic. (All she knew was that it had something to do with bottling true love. Although how he’d done that...She didn’t have a clue.) But..She’d learned a long time ago that life wasn’t fair. Of course he’d judge her for something she’d carelessly spat out when she was at her wits end, exhausted and fearful for Henry’s life! She took a deep breath. She was the one who’d come to see him. It was only fair she try to explain however bitterly sarcastic Jefferson was being. At least he hadn’t demanded she leave. He was giving her a chance to say something. She should be grateful after everything she’d cost him. She knew that but...She couldn’t be! She was in so much pain! Henry didn’t believe in her! No one did! She needed someone..one person to say they knew it wasn’t true! A few tears brimmed in her eyes before spilling over. Why...? Why was it always Jefferson who saw her cry? Regina rarely cried. Sorrow and grief were not particularly helpful emotions so she tried to numb the pain, focus on anger if she needed to. But she was human and an emotional creature as Jefferson had coined her. So there were times when she cried rare as they were. But usually they were reserved for when she was alone where no one could view her weakness and pick it apart. But this was the third time now Jefferson had seen her cry outside of their...whatever they’d had in the past. He’d been there that night with Daniel, when she’d lost him for a second time when Victor said the surgery was a failure and there was no way to bring him back. (That was before feelings had been professed.) She tried to regain her composure quickly but she hadn’t been fast enough. She’d gotten it together for Victor but not for Jefferson. Then there was the time when Henry had eaten the poisoned apple. Regina had thought she was alone but Jefferson was there. And Jefferson saw. And now... “Please, Jefferson..I won’t take up much time. I don’t want to bother you. I know..You probably won’t believe that. But..You were never someone I wanted to hurt! But..I just need to know...Please..Please tell me..You don’t believe it do you?! You know I didn’t kill Archie don’t you?!” Her tone was frantic. She was making a spectacle of herself like this...Crying out in the open, voice a little too high pitched. She was a wreck...But..She had to know! Jefferson...He could hate her...She wouldn’t like it; but, she’d accept. it She’d consider it her due for the way she’d made him suffer because she was careless because she was selfish but...But...Please...Please at least let him know this wasn’t her! She wasn’t that person! She hadn’t killed Archie! There was still good inside her after everything! She wanted to change!

You...Hardly a warm greeting. But then she hadn’t expected one to begin with. That was why she’d used the skeleton keys because she hadn’t even been certain he’d let her in if she rang the doorbell. She could hardly blame him. He didn’t understand the full reasoning behind Wonderland. And she was in no state to explain it to him now. And even if she did, after all the betrayals...Would he even believe her? And if he did, would he even care? Regardless of reasons, she’d separated him from his daughter and left him at Mother’s mercy. She understood better than anyone else what a monster Mother was. But...She’d been scared. In her desperation, she’d been paying much more attention to the Dark Curse Rumple had idly handed her. Well..It hadn’t been idle. But he’d been much more eager than Regina. She might not be Rumple level magic scholar but...Magic always comes with a price. She knew that. She’d lost track of how many damn times Rumple had told her that. She’d gotten the memo. Although Rumple thought she never really drunk it in. That wasn’t quite true. She was simply always willing to pay the price because she needed magic. And she'd be willing to pay it without fully understanding what it was. For something called the “Dark Curse”, she figured the price would be steep. So she’d been hoping she wouldn’t have to resort to that. But countless failures had forced her to actually contemplate the curse. She knew a heart needed to be sacrificed. And for the curse to end all curses...She’d feared not just any heart would do. It might very well be the heart of the thing she loved most. Jefferson and her weren’t together by that point. No...Things had ended...rather poorly. Jefferson had gotten married, had a kid even. Yes...He’d built himself a fine family. Regina didn’t particularly want to think about the rage that consumed her when she’d first found out. She’d felt...forgotten, unnecessary, disposable...something left behind to fade away into nothingness, dissolve in the sands of time. But the severe pain was just proof of the intensity of her feelings, of the love they’d once shared. So yes...She knew she still cared about him. More than her father...The one who’d looked out for her happiness, the one who had saved her with his sweet smiles and tender touch, the one who had helped with Leopold and freed her...It was Jefferson. She cherished his heart above all others. Her heart had grown darker, blackened since their separation. With them apart, she was terrified that one day at her wits end, she’d cast the curse, consequences be damned. She was an emotional creature, prone to fits of whimsy which could be useful or detrimental. And with her power...She didn’t want to do something she couldn’t reverse, that she’d regret forever. One day...Snow might push her too far. She might truly feel like she’d lost everything and that her only chance at happiness rest with the Dark Curse. She might give into her darker impulses likely with a nudge from Rumple. And then Jefferson would... Mother’s scheme as dreadful and painful as it was, provided opportunity. It gave Regina a way to rescue her father and keep Jefferson safe. She very much doubted Jefferson had given Regina’s actions all that much thought, being consumed by hate the way he was. But she’d known the rules coming in. How could she not? Jefferson had taken her so many places. So..That being the case, why wouldn’t she have brought a guard or just some random person to leave behind in Father’s stead? It didn’t have to be Jefferson. And Jefferson valued family as much as her. There should have been no reason to lie to him. They’d...had their issues. But Jefferson understood how much of monster Mother was. Well..He couldn’t truly comprehend, not the way Regina had. How could he? He hadn’t lived in her oppressive household for years and years. But he knew about what she’d done to Daniel. And he saw the heart vault so..he could at least hazard a guess. Surely if she’d explained what happened, he’d willingly agree to help rescue Father. But then nothing would be solved. Yes, she’d get her father back. But then what? Jefferson would still be in danger. He was the last person she wanted to hurt. But..of course she’d have to hurt him either way. But with the curse, he’d come back, be reunited with his daughter. Jefferson thought she’d chosen her father over him. But really..It was the other way around. Jefferson’s heart was the one she’d protected. Her father’s was the one she sacrificed. She...In the end she wasn’t sure if she could leave him there. He’d begged and pleaded and mentioned his daughter. She’d hesitated but...She had to save him! So long as he was in the Enchanted Forest and Snow was free...There was no telling what Regina would do in a fit of passion. And...Regina was lonely. Father would at least stay by her side. And..It had been Jefferson’s choice! He had been the one to leave Grace for riches. He should have understood that family was more important! Yes...She was rationalizing and knew it. There had been an easier answer hadn’t there been? Really...What had this curse done for her happiness? Maybe she would have been better off just trying to fix things with Jefferson to begin with. What?! What in the world was she thinking?! Yes...She felt weak and desperate at the moment; but, she couldn’t change what she’d done, couldn’t go back! So this sort of reflection was not only pointless but detrimental! It would stop NOW! What had she done? She didn’t even know what he was asking. Was he talking about the Dark Curse? Or was he asking why she was so upset now? And then he repeated the question, throwing the word hell into the mix, tone much more angry and far less civil. But..It was warranted. It was an accident! She’d given him a nice mansion, anything he could ever dream of. But it wasn’t right! It was supposed to be for him and Grace both! It was supposed to be an indirect apology for Wonderland. But..This was the curse to end all curses. And it wasn’t exactly something she could test run. Maybe you couldn’t circumvent the curse for anyone. Maybe part of the price was that everyone suffered..including her. Rumple had warned her. Maybe..Maybe she should have listened. Maleficent too..She’d begged Regina not to do this to soldier on naturally. She'd said quite clearly that this wouldn’t make her happy. Her only friend...And Regina had gone back on their agreement, snatched back the curse because she’d thought she’d needed it. Now she wondered. “I cast the Dark Curse,” she said smoothly, seamlessly, sounding much more like her old self, confident, poised. “It’s not to your liking?” she asked coyly. Why?! What was wrong with her?! That’s not what she wanted to say! Not at all! This wasn’t why she’d come here! But...She was so used to never revealing weakness after all those years as the ‘Evil Queen’. Now...Had she entirely lost the ability to open up to people?

Regina was sick to death of her guards failing her! How was it that Snow always managed to escape her clutches?! Although really..It was less Regina’s clutches and more her ‘elite’ guards’ at this point. The tale was always the same. The guards would find her, be damn confident they had her cornered, some shenanigans would happen and then...Poof! Snow was gone! So no more leaving it up to others! If you wanted something done right, you had to do it yourself apparently! Really..As much as she liked her guards, as much as they were loyal to her because she treated them like people not just numbers, knew their names, family, and basic ambitions...Sometimes like now she felt they were completely worthless! She knew she was in a temper after this last little Snow fiasco. So yes, she understood that her guards were in fact quite useful at times, providing her with both information and security. But in terms of Snow...It was never enough! Regina would be damned if the girl got to live freely after what she’d stolen from her! Snow would suffer and suffer dearly for her lies and manipulation! Once...once long ago Regina had found her sweet, affectionate, caring, a little angel, someone she would have loved to call sister. Regina hated her all the more for the deception because once upon a time, she’d liked her maybe even loved her. But now Regina was wise to her tricks! Now she saw the little demon for what she was, a remorseless promise breaker who ignorantly destroyed dreams. Foolish, pampered little princess, cruel in her blindness. Well...At least Snow wasn’t exactly a princess anymore. She had her claim yes. But now she was an outcast, a bandit all thanks to Regina. But still..It infuriated Regina that Snow saw herself as a victim, innocent, blissfully unaware of her crimes! Regina should have told Snow the truth when she'd had the chance! But she supposed she'd been a slow learner just like the genie. At that point in time she truly believed love was a strength and not a weakness. Daniel had loved her for her kindness so even though her heart had shattered she'd tried to be sympathetic and understanding towards Snow. She refused to see the little girl for what she was, a devil who offered sweet promises, words of comfort and encouragement, to foster trust and belief. But the monster was oh so free with its tongue the moment someone’s back was turned. How easily had her mother persuaded Snow to speak that deadly secret? Did Snow give in right away? She supposed it didn't matter. Daniel...Daniel had been a weakness. Jefferson too. Both her love lives had ended badly. But at least...Yes, she was still upset with Jefferson, hurt even if she was honest. But at least he was still alive. She’d never admit just how grateful she was for that fact. If something happened to Jefferson...No! She refused to think about that! How...After all this time, after his treachery, how could he continue to tug at her heart like this?! Love was weakness! Hadn’t she learned yet? She would have shaken her head to clear her thoughts; but, then she’d look visibly troubled. And a queen should be composed! And this was official queen business! She’d heard Snow was in the area. Regina was optimistic that Snow might come to market to buy some supplies for...whatever the hell she planned on doing next. Even a bandit didn’t steal everything. She robbed the queen’s carriages so that she could buy something or multiple somethings. She could be here. It was worth a look anyways. Despite her anger, Regina brightened slightly as she moved from cart to cart. She loved traveling, exploring. Sadly, being queen kept her rather busy and she could not wander as much as she would have liked. She only left the castle when she had work to carry out. But when she was out, she always did enjoy herself. She loved seeing new places. She’d been too cooped up under her mother’s ‘care’. And then when Leopold married her, he’d locked her in a beautiful little cage. He didn’t like his wife wandering about anymore than Mother had approved of her daughter leaving the estate. Her job had been to sit and look pretty and satisfy Leopold’s other needs when he had them. He’d had them too often. There had been no tenderness or warmth between them, not even the affection of friends. Leopold had been cold to Regina and pushed her away. He’d made it abundantly clear that she was to sit beside him for feasts and come to his bed when he had the urge but otherwise was to stay away. But he was afraid of her affection straying so he would rarely let her leave the castle. Silly man. He had no idea another had already captured her heart. Of if only knew the things that went on under his very roof in Regina’s bed... Still no sign of Snow; but, Regina wasn’t horribly optimistic she’d find her here to begin with. The fresh air was doing her some good. At least the weather was nice, hardly a cloud in the sky. Not too warm. Not too cold either. There was even a pleasant breeze. Regina was smiling slightly when she moved to the next cart; but, as soon as her amber orbs rested on the vendor’s face, the smile froze. It......It couldn’t be! “Jefferson?!” she cried out, aghast. “What on Earth are you doing here?!” She couldn’t understand it! Why in the world would he be selling...mushrooms?! And his clothes...What happened to all his fancy suits?! Being a portal jumper paid good money. And there’d certainly be no need to sell anything at market with his work! So...What was going on here?!
