Liam was young, very young when he had to experience and endure the worst and saddest moment of his life. One morning, he woke up, feeling hopeful for another day, learning about the ship, playing with his little brother, enjoying his time on the sea until she rocked them to sleep like only their mother could have done. He was looking forward to sitting with Killian, enjoying a cup of ean and generally just being together. Instead it turned out to be a nightmare for Liam Jones. The evening was the worst.
He held Killian through tears, of anger of abandonment, even though his hands hurt, even though his little heart hurt. He tried to be strong for Killian. He tried to be there for him and hold him and make sure he felt better, but once Killian fell asleep in Liams bed, the boy got up. He sat in a chair overlooking the ocean. Liam stared at his bleeding hands, which was the doing of their father. He remembered every tear Killian shed as he himself shed some. Their father abandoned them. Did he not love them? Was it so easy for them to trade them for his own future? That’s not what fathers were meant to do. They were meant to care for their kids. Were they that worthless to them? In that night, through tears and bloody hands, Liam swore to himself, that nobody else would make Killian feel worthless ever again, not on his watch. He’d do what their father couldn’t do, even if Liam just felt like crying and screaming after their father, mourning his brothers and his own childhood and freedom. His bloody hands were only the beginning.
"Don't worry, little brother, I won't let anything bad happen to you."

“The savior… yeah right.” This was one of the many things Liam rightfully disagreed with the others, especially those damn dwarves. He found it shocking how fast their loyalties changed from Emma to the damn Evil Queen this fast. Emma hadn’t even done anything, at least nothing they could prove was hers. Apart from maybe take something, but hell, Regina had done worse, Gold had done worse, but they already condemned her. And Liam really wanted to make them scrub a deck, if he wasn’t so damn scared to ever go on one again. In any way he had lost all respect for them and he’d be sure never to put his trust in this bunch.
“Handy.” Liam commented as she used magic to set up the table. It was. She could do that with light magic, too, he suspected, but he’d not ask that. In any case he could bet she’d use this particular new trick later as well. And if not, there was no loss. He didn’t care what Emma there was, as long as she loved his brother, he was on her side, for good. Something, one might call it a hunch, told him he would stay on her side through this all.
“He’s as annoying as he is in reality, isn’t he?” Liam asked as he took a seat at the table with Emma. He smiled at her. “I’m pretty sure you can make your own decisions, he can bugger off. As far as I know you’re perfectly capable of taking care of things all by yourself. You wouldn’t be the savior if you weren’t.” Maybe it was a bit of a late statement, but yes, he still considered her the savior. The title did not just transfer to Regina of all people. “And in any case, I don’t think we need his company for a casual dinner between friends and maybe later some… DVV?”

“With Robin, drinking himself to oblivion.” Liam pointed out. Killian was wrecked from whatever transpired between him and Emma that day. The older Jones had no idea what that was, though. And he would not ask her. This was to be an evening for the two of them. In all this chaos, in this pain this caused, Liam wanted Emma, the Emma he knew was still in there, to know he cared. While others wanted her, only her, he would be there for her through it all, through every gruesome moment and heartache and pain, through the hardships. There was no other way for him. He had endured so long with a monster to hold him captive, he knew what it felt like. He knew how he longed for company, even though the monster surrounding him was deadly. He had longed for company, for anyone to see behind the monster and see him, not even Killian had managed that.
“I’m not.” Liam simply replied to her statement of him not getting her to change. He knew that. The Dark One was powerful, it took a lot more than a mere mortal armed with kindness to get rid of it. But he could be there for her. “Elizabeth is doing fine, Emma. I want to spend the evening with you, if you’ll have me. If you’d rather not be in my company, so be it.” But he wanted this and he hoped Emma would accept his company. “Look, Emma, I don’t want you to change. You’re the Dark One now, but you’re still Emma. And I happen to consider you my friend. I want to be there for you. I… when the Leviathan had me, I was lonely. There was a monster surrounding me as well as magic, but I was lonely. And I don’t want you to be. You don't deserve to be left all alone now after all you did for them..”

Ever since Leviathan interfered in his life, held him captive for centuries, Liam was easier spooked. He thought the opposite might have happened, but it turned out, now, free of the monster, he felt more spooked than ever and so Emmas sudden appearance behind her made him jump. He was lucky he didn’t drop the food. “Emma! Be careful, I’m an old man!” He was. Centuries old. But in reality, he wanted this to be easy, he wanted her to really know he meant no harm, no judgment, just company and that included him simply making fun of himself and his age, which was quite ancient. “And I died before, Ems, careful, I might drop dead at your feet and stink up the pretty new house.” Not that he really thought that. A simple stunt like that, did not kill him yet. Nor was there any indication towards her being capable of killing someone. Liam turned to her, smiling just as softly as she did, before throwing caution to the wind and pulling her into an embrace.
“I took a guess.” He explained, when he let her go. “I saw your family in the dinner and Killian. That meant nobody was with you, logically. I… I couldn’t bloody well sit by and pretend like there wasn’t someone missing.” As if it was a free invitation the former captain walked to the table and started to unpack the food. “You know, there is so much talk of you being evil, yet they don’t stop for a second to notice that so far you haven’t done anything in that direction. And in any case, you’re still Emma. You’d hold on to any of us, be there for any of us, so time someone returns the favor, even though it’s a bloody shame it’s not your parents.” Pulling out these weird onion rings, he grinned. “Speaking of: Next time I’m at the diner, I’m going to punch all six dwarves in the face.”

Not remembering everything bothered him, then again he didn’t exactly feel 300 years old, thanks to spending centuries in the clutches of some mythical creature. The thing that made him different from the rest of the people having to deal with Emma Swan being the Dark One, was that experience and frankly having raised someone alone for most of his life. He knew his brother was struggling with the situation, he couldn’t blame him. And while he naturally joined him in Grannys, it was to his own surprise, that he had to find out that he didn’t sit with Emmas family and they were perfectly fine. It felt like a stab to his own heart, because he felt for his brother and his brother fought very hard to be worthy of Emma. And he felt for Emma, because this was too normal. They weren’t acting like they had lost their daughter to darkness just two days ago according to their knowledge.
Knowing Belle would be there for Killian, Liam made his way to the Dark Ones lair, carrying take out for her. It might be a desperate attempt, but what else could he do? He had no magic, he was batshit scared of the element that was once his home, thanks to the Leviathan. But he could protect his brother and the woman he by now viewed as a sister through the relationship she had with Killian. He found her door alone – made sense, who would be stupid enough to steal from the most powerful dark and light magic wielder in town? Only a stupid idiot. Entering, Liam immediately made his presence known to her, should she be there. If not, he’d set up the take out and await her.
“Emma? It’s Liam. I brought take out. Grilled Cheese. I thought you might like some company.”

“It doesn’t. As a Captain you’re responsible for many lives. You saved them when you left me behind.” He saved those people and protected them and did not doom them to a painful long death. Liam too survived. Nobody died, it was a greater achievement than that of many captains. Unknowingly he saved the lives of Liam, his crew and his own. Liam had to give him credit for it. In the end this was Killians achievement, that they could not reunite as this now, only his, did he not see?
Liam couldn’t help but note the irony of the situation. Back in the day, decades, centuries ago he would bring a cup with liquid to his brothers lips when the younger was sick or injured. He’d spend so much time caring for him, even refusing to go on a mission when he knew his brother needed care – despite Elizabeths presence. Now his brother helped him drink. Even the assurance of him being safe now sounded familiar yet reversed. “Shouldn’t I be the one saying that?” He was the older brother after all.
“No. I… I came straight here when I washed ashore. I thought a tavern would be… the best place to seek help in. I didn’t even know you were here.” Yet fate had weird way of working. It brought him here of all people, brought them together after all this time. He was glad, though. All those years he had longed to see his little brother again, to know he was fine and now he did. "Why?"

“You, little brother, don’t know that.” Neither did Liam, but given the right incentive, he would have done anything, especially if his brothers life was concerned. Liam, unlike Killian seemed to hold no illusion about what he was ready to do. The stupid boy couldn’t see it, could he? He doubted himself and maybe part of it was right. Maybe he did bad things, but it was easier to just give in and be evil, instead of changing or trying hard. No, he was no villain and Killian had every reason to be proud of himself, just like Liam was proud of him.
“You are the man I raised you to be, Killian. You are. It’s so easy to take the easy route, take the easy way out. And you did, no one can blame you, Killian. But then you changed back. You didn’t choose easy, you chose right and that, that is how I raised you, how mother raised you. You’re human, but you’re good.” And he would always choose good, eventually. Liam smiled at him. Their mother would be so proud of that. “I have. I have seen her.” Liam raised his hand where they had tied the threads. “I know she’s here, we’ve already been reunited."

“Stories and horses can be acquired.” In fact they were ridiculously easy for them to get access to, thanks to Killians wife. “Killians wife is noble born, her parents life close by, she still goes to see them and since they were all for the union of her and Killian, I assume they will have no problem of welcoming you into the extended family. They have so many books and horses. I am sure the two of you will enjoy many rides together, so will we.” When he was home he would gladly take her riding. Even their horse would be a possibility, though it was more a working horse, a gentle, lazy beast. Liam stared at her hand, feeling strangely good about this. He was enchanted by this princess, his princess actually.
“I’m terribly stubborn and strict.” He admitted, not really meaning it. He still smiled. Of course he knew he was, but was it a bad thing? “My brother and I were left alone at a very young age, he was just a kid, so I had to raise him all by myself. I will be strict, but fair. And I will tease him merciless and he me. You can expect us to bicker and mock-fight but usually you can ignore out fights. We come in a package. Always have, always will.”

“You were so young.” Of course he wouldn’t remember it all, probably only the worst parts of it or the parts that broached him the most, like that his mother could no longer play with him, that even Liam had less time for him, that was probably what he remembered the most. The consequences, now that was something else entirely. Liam allowed himself to breathe deeply and lean just a little more heavily on his brother. He hated the tale, hated to remember his mothers struggles to stay awake. He remembered one night, she was deathly pale, but Killian was upset and so she fought sleep so desperately to tell him a story. The next night Liam insisted.
“Because… The first thing we noticed was how tired she got. You hated it, but you were too young to understand. She slept all the time. She grew weaker and weaker, could barely move or get up. When she cut herself her wounds would bleed forever and she started to bruise so easily. I remember… once you hugged her and it left bruises and you were so upset, we could barely console you even though you didn’t do anything wrong, but you thought you hurt her. You didn’t understand it was due to her sickness. The truth is, Killian: I never even noticed Shattered sight hitting the town. I slept through it. I feel like I need to sleep, I feel so weak.” He still kept on walking with his brother. After all they needed to get to that hospital thing. “Killian, nobody could help mother…”

“Yes, Liam.” Had he not just proven it was him? As much as he could. But then he slowly realized where this came from. After god knew how long, Liam needed a moment to realize the emotion and acknowledgement in his brothers voice and eyes, like he saw him for the first time and perhaps he did. Before that he had refused to see him as him, now he finally accepted that it was him, really him. Back then he had also doubted him, hadn’t he? Liam melted into the embrace, hugging his brother back, but briefly. No matter how badly Killian needed the reunion, he knew it would be cut short one way or another, so he pulled away, had to. They would always have time later on, if they survived.
“There is time for that later, Killian.” He said softly. “But like I said the Leviathan is out there. Multiple of them, grown and babies. They will attack. We have to set sail now if we want to survive this. Or well, you.” They would probably let him live, keep him alive as a pet for more years. Maybe one or two more of them. If they wanted to actually survive they needed to get the hell out of here, preferably on land. God he missed to be on land. The sea, his former mistress held horrors for him now, in the form of this creature. “Maybe the Jewel can outrun them, Killian. But only if we get a headstart. Once she decides to strike… we’ll lose.”
