Of course Love was all that matter, even to him, but love could no feed them. If it could, he could have provided for Killian so easily when he was younger, yet he couldn’t. He had to give himself to the navy and work hard in order to feed himself and his young brother with Killian joining later one as well. Of course Killian was right when he held his little speech about how important love was, it was, just as important as the boy said, but at the same time the problem remained: He could not give Elizabeth the standard she was used to. He would be lucky to feed her and any child and she would have to work hard as the Lady of the household and Lady of the estate, given that he knew that they’d be given one by the king upon marriage.
“Brother, you sing a praise to me, yet you should sing it to yourself as well. All I did was do what I had to do, for us. That we happen to be good at what we do is a plus.” He could not say a lot, but the reality of the fact that for Elizabeth it would be a decline in comfort would not change. However his brother got him. The moment he turned it all around he got him.
“No. You’re right. Any woman to have you would be lucky. You are hard working and would worship the ground she’s walking on. And that’s the problem here: This is Elizabeth, Killian. This is a free spirit. I have to be away from her so long, how would our love last? And she’d live different than what she’s used to. I love her, but… does she love me? Could it be enough for her? I don’t want to get my hopes up just to have them crashed.”

It felt like being startled awake, the throat clearing alone. His eyes shot open, but focusing was a bit of a struggle. Yet there was only one person in this town dressing like that: All black and a hook, his brother. “Killian.”, he said in a way of greeting his brother. “Of course it’s not taken.” What a stupid question. Oh, wait, had he been joking? His mind still hadn’t caught up with being awake. In fact his entire body felt heavy, sluggish even, like he had no energy left in his body. Like he was completely drained despite basically having slept through the last 24 hours – safe for maybe one or two hours of being awake. Was the Leviathan catching up to him? Were those long term effects? Or was this something else, something he might have seen before.
With a yelp on his lips, he had Killian pull him into an awkward hug, declaring how he missed him. What the hell happened that had his baby brother that overjoyed, he wondered?
“Given that we were apart from almost 3 centuries, a few days can’t be as bad. But I missed you too.” Without even thinking about it, Liam lowered his head to rest on Killians shoulders, allowing his eyes to close once more, while still being awake. He listened to his brothers breathing for a few moments, hoping to find strength in him to match Killians enthusiasm, but instead he just found himself wondering at it, even being slightly irritated by it.

Slowly, very slowly he became aware of a voice. Familiar arms were holding him while he lay on the ground, his head in a lap he was all too familiar with too. Killian. This was his brother. Once he held him while the poison almost killed him, now, so many years later he held him as his body came back to. Liams eyes fluttered open again. With every breath he took, he became more and more aware of his surroundings and also of how weak he felt. His body had been sustained by the Leviathan all this time. Now and after his escaped, he was weak, drained, but he knew he could recover.
“I hear you, Killian.” Liam moved, just a bit to get more comfortable, knowing that he would not be able to walk without help anyway. His body felt too weak for all of this. But now he saw his brother and that that gave him a different kind of strength. He survived and they were reunited again. Fate really worked in ways he’d never understand.
“Fate is funny, isn’t it? How long has it been brother? Decades? I thought I’d never see you again. And yet fate brought us together again. You don’t believe I’m an illusion this time, do you? Because I can assure you I am real and very exhausted.”

“No need to apologize, lass.” It was but a simple misunderstanding and Liam assumed it was born from the different times they have lived in. He was a bit older than she was, years even. His time was different. And then Storybrooke was even more different. Misunderstandings could only be normal then. Liam leaned back and propped his feet up on his coffee table. He was at home, he could follow his own rules, not the old repressing protocols.
“I don’t mind. You’re quite nice on the eyes and you can trust you. Had I wanted to well hurt you, I surely would have done so by now, right?” And he really really had no intention to do so. He was no violent man. He had been raised to appreciate women. Again he smiled.
“You forget that I have been raised in a different time, Rose. Back then relationships were more arranged. I had to beg for her parents approval. I think that’s still in me. Besides… even though I might like being in a relationship, I firmly believe love should be the basis of one.” He wanted nothing less. “Maybe you should get that shirt off, or you will get it dirty and I do not know how to wash it. Why are burgers so unhandy anyway. They're not very easy to eat, are they?"

There could have been no other reaction that would have been as much a clear answer as this one was: She kissed him again, so sweet and tender, he could have just lost himself in her lips and in this unconventional, yet beautiful kiss they shared. By the gods, this was a dream come true. Or was it a dream? Maybe. But it felt too real. Not dream had yet shown him images as clear as this before. It was beautiful, gorgeous and felt like heaven was so very, very close to where he was right now. Once they parted, Liam felt his cheeks heat up, blushing like a young school boy. This was it then.
“I felt for you, for a long time now, Elizabeth. But… I know I am just a Captain. I have so little to offer you, but my heart.” And he had to hope that this could be enough for her. She was an heiress, but maybe she could be the humble lover of a Captain, a trusted soldier of the king, who might potentially climb the ranks further. Maybe a family and love could be enough for her. At the very least, Liam prayed they would be. He loved her and he knew Killian would love to call her sister one day.
"Could you maybe accept a mere Captain as your suitor?"

“Hardly genetic.” He laughed. “If it was genetic, we’d be cheating lying bastards, leaving as soon as waters get a bit stormy.” And that was not the case with them. They had the pleasure of having enjoyed their mothers influence. “It’s entirely our mothers influence, my Lady Swan, nothing genetic.” He could tell even thought she said he’d be proud of Killian that she was just as proud of him, if not prouder. But to hear it, from her, he was happy.
“I am always proud of him, lass. I have been every day of my life and even through afterlife. It’s…” How was he supposed to explain it? He was Killians older brother, but for the most of his life he had raised him, from when he was just a little boy to his death. He’d always be proud of him, but just in a fraternal way.
“And so are you, I guess. A true hero.” And potentially an anchor for Killian. He hoped she was one. “Lass… why are the carriages moving by themselves? Isn’t that an awful waste of magic?”

He nodded to his wife as she agreed to changing. She could thank a few people for how he treated her, not just him, for his attitude was born from being raised by a wonderful woman. And her parents had been deliberate in choosing a man fit for her needs, a man who would respect and protect her. He had been a natural choice it appeared as he never even made a difference between respecting the King and his Queen. And so her parents had been hopeful to have a best possible match for their daughter in him. He did intend to keep her safe and happy, no matter if it meant
While he let her go to the Captains Quarters alone – her men had brought her belongings there already, as far as he had been informed. He hoped it was the case. Meanwhile he busied himself with making sure the food was ready for her. They had made sure to have food from her home, as close in taste as possible. They wanted to make the beginning of her arranged marriage as easy as possible, given how she married so far out of her class. He was just a captain, but he had ensured that she would have all the comfort he could offer, even if it was not much.
After a while he came to knock on the door. “Emma, are you alright in there?”

“But this past has left scars on him. I have yet to see him, but I heard his love, I know him. I know him better than myself at times and those scars, they’re bound to be deep, Elizabeth. Killian is… Why am I telling you this, you know him.” She knew him for so long now, she was aware of how his little brother way. She would be one of the people to know how he reacted to tragedy.
The dark haired man wrapped his arms around her once again, still overwhelmed by it all. This was uncomprehendable to him and he would stand by what he had promised Emma, he would fight alongside them, for Killian, but apart from that, he wanted to spend every moment with her, with his brother and his new love. He wanted to get to know her and be sure his brother was in good hands.
“We will not let each other go again, Elizabeth. When we die again, my love, we will die side by side, in each others arms. This time we will meet our fate and the afterlife together. Who knows? Maybe we’re granted a long life now, instead of just a short moment. Either way, I want to make sure we make the most of this chance. We have to. Plus, you can’t tell me you’re not curious about Killians love.”

He could handle peoples stares, he could deal with it all. He would request help and information, maybe the owners would grant him a moment to rest his weary body and catch up with the aftermath of having freed himself from the Leviathan by a chance of luck. But when his name was called out, he followed the sound of a way too familiar voice. What were the chances? This was impossible, yet it had happened. The fate worked in truly mysterious ways.
“Killian? Brother!” He felt a rush of relief and happiness course through his worn body. Killian was here and he seemed relatively fine and intact – the shock of course was given, like the last time they met, when he was a slave to Leviathan and Killian barely escaped with his life. Being abandoned then still stung. His brother hadn’t seen and understood the fear gripping Liams heart tightly.
As he stepped forward, wanting to get closer to his brother, needing to embrace him, to hold him and never let him go ever again, he was surprised at how his body started to sway and his vision started to swim. What? It only took a moment for him to realize what was happening and how inevitable that was. Someone reached for him and softened his fall; that was the last thing he realized before everything went black.

In all of this, Liam had braced to have his heart broken. What else was he to expect? Could he have gotten lucky? Not in his mind. He had intended to try, to humor Killian a bit, to hold on to this tiny flicker of hope that she could feel something for him. Could this lingering kiss on his cheek be it? Could she feel something? Her words indicated it, in a way. Maybe it was the case. If it was, what was he going to do? Should he speak to her? No, he didn’t have a way to put his feelings into words like his brother did. He could lead, command and negotiate, but those skills were useless here. Killian would be in his element. Killian… he was the solution here. What he would do, would be what he should do probably. He’d lose himself in words, make it awkward. She had taken action, now it was time for him.
Liam moved just this little bit. With his heart hammering nervously in his chest and his throat going dry, it took every bit of courage to him. He placed a hand on her cheek, then slowly pressed his lips to hers, in a first tentative kiss, which he broke way too fast, unsure of how she’d react. He couldn’t even look at her, waiting for what she would do, his eyes focused on those delicious soft lips.

He knew his brother was direct, but never this direct. He asked him about his feelings for Elizabeth as if they were the most obvious thing in the world. Liam almost choked on his own saliva then and there. Well he should have guessed, his brother knew him from the moment he was born, they had hardly ever been really separated, not even the Navy managing to keep the Jones brothers away from each other for too long as they both cared for each other and felt responsible for the others well being. And now apparently his brother cared for Liam and Elizabeth getting together against a suitor. He wasn’t mad. If her parents had decided upon an eligible match, they wouldn’t steer away from it for a lowly captain of the navy, despite knowing him and Killian for years and sharing affection. This was about her future, not just a laughing matter. What did they have to offer? A modest household, with a modest income, that might support a small family for both brothers and their wives, but that was it.
“Why answer when you appear to know it already. YES! Yes, I have feelings for Elizabeth brother and I feel like I can’t breathe just thinking about it. But I have no chance, don’t you see?” He sighed. Her parents cared for her, more than their father ever cared for even just their mother. “We are commoners, Killian. Commoners who climbed the ranks in the navy, yes, but still commoners, mere soldiers. What do we have to offer to our wives? Our estate, our income. Is that enough for an heiress like her? For her parents? I doubt it. It would be a modest life full of hard work. They would not want me for her. Feelings don’t matter. They want Elizabeth to be taken care of and while I could do it emotionally and want to do it, financially and in terms of status: We remain commoners, not worthy of her. She’d sink in status if she were to accept me. I have nothing to offer her, no comfort, nothing.” He was standing now, shaking with emotion, with withheld anger at knowing he stood no chance, but still losing the hope he had, it made him slightly mad. He fell in love, but it stood no chance.

Liam honestly would have let her decide. He would have not pushed her, but he was glad she decided it would be better this way, because she was right. There would be more doubt eliminated, the wedding was less likely to be attacked and she was more likely to be allowed to live in peace in their care. Liam placed both hands on her cheeks, holding her close as she kissed him softly and he kissed her back, gently nudging her to give in just a little more, to deepen the kiss just a little more. Her lips, her kiss, felt like heaven. He found himself flustered and blushing as he broke the kiss. It took him a moment of just staring into her beautiful green eyes until he found words.
“Well, Emma, it seems you’re quite the kisser.” He definitely could see himself looking forward to sharing a kiss with his wife in the future if they proved to be as satisfying as those were, if she agreed of course. Once again Liam took her hand to lead his wife, now Mrs. Jones, out of the chapel across to the haven where the ship was anchored. They would have to endure a little voyage back home. They had to set it outside of their hometown in order to protect her. Liam brought her on board.
“The Captains cabin is all yours, later, Emma. I shall not do anything you do not want. But for now, before we set say, lets eat and celebrate. We might have married out of convenience, but that does not mean we can’t be merry today. Is there anything I can fetch you? Do you want to change? I could imagine the corset is constricting to be in all day.”

There was a story about a curse and a savior. He had no idea how Killian fit into it, but somehow he did. Hopefully he would have time to learn all about it. Hopefully he’d get time to really speak to Emma, to get to know her and see her interact with his brother. He nodded, the idea of this being initially a cursed place sinking in.
“So you broke a curse?” It was damn impressive from what he experienced in his time. Curses were bad news, no matter their shape or form. This one was potentially a curse as well. But they’d get through it. Even if it was a bad curse, he’d refuse to let anyone use him against Killian and in turn against Emma. He took her hand and looked into her eyes.
“For what it’s worth, I shall be of service to you to figure this out in whatever way I can.” Not that he believed he could do much, since this was so obviously magic. He stood no chance against magic, he was just a mere mortal men with no powers. But he’d do whatever he could to help them and protect them. He had lost his life before, but he’d make sure neither of them would.

“I do! I do. I am your brother. I should have protected you.” Even from his own stupidity, yet he hadn’t. He had failed his beloved baby brother. He even hurt him now, despite not wanting to. And of course he heard him. He was blaming himself. How could there be any doubt about that ever? This was Killian, his beloved brother. Of course he’d blame himself. He had done so before and he would again. Liam turned, seeing all the emotions in Killians eyes of course. This stupid idiot. Liam rushed forward. He placed his hands on Killians shoulders, staring into those familiar blue eyes.
“Nonsense, Killian. Utter nonsense. You could have never tainted out family name. You survived. That is all I could have asked for. You survived. You made your experiences and grew from them. You’ve made me so proud Killian? You’ve chosen your path, brother and it brought you here, into the arms of Emma, to love, to happiness. The ship is in good shape. Can’t you see that? Killian all I ever wanted it for you to be healthy and happy. And I see that now. What you had to get there, it made you grow, I can see that. I see that immediately. I failed you. But you never failed me.” What the hell. Liam simply pulled his younger brother into another hug, savoring the feeling of holding him once more. He missed those feelings. He was one of the first to hold this little bundle and now he got to hold him again.
“Why are you so afraid, Killian? What happened, that makes you so afraid of my judgment?” He wanted to know the whole story, but at least he was sure there was nothing that could make him think ill of his baby brother. He loved Killian, after all. He loved him so much and whatever it took to survive, to deal with what he went through and grow, so be it. He knew Killians values. It would take a lot to make him completely loose them and the man he saw right before him, was not a man who lost his values.

Those should be good news to Liam. Elizabeth had a suitor. She could find a man to marry her, a suitable match. She could get it all, a wedding, children, a secure place in life, a future. If the man was good, he’d leave her her freedom, let her go to the sea to watch the sunset as she so loved. He hoped he’d allow her to spend moments there, to just relaxed, as Liam knew this was one of the few placed all three of them could relax. Still Liam struggled to breathe. Secretly maybe, despite realistically knowing he’d be no match for her, he had hoped, he had dreamed and wished to be such a man for her. He just wasn’t. And it did make him struggle to even keep the façade up. Killian would probably see right through him.
“Of… of course. Brilliant… brilliant news for her.” And not good at all to him. It even got worse. From what it sounded like her parents did consider this to be the match for her. She’d… get married. But to him it felt like he could no longer breathe. He even felt physically dizzy. How was this even possible? And why did this happen? Right. Right now he curse being born a commoner.
“We… we should… in whatever way.” She deserved their support. It should make no difference, but there was no way Liam could do it right now. Later, maybe. He turned to look back outside, trying to calm his nerves and body.
